DC United was the worst team in the MLS by a significant margin last season. There is something to be excited about with DC United. Christian Benteke came over as a Designated Player in August 2022, and the former Premier League star should be able to find success at the lower level since he is only 32 years old. Benteke only scored one goal in his seven appearances with the team last season, but he should be able to make more of an impact after an offseason of chemistry building.

We also saw the club make some big moves in the offseason. A whopping 13 players left DC United this offseason including long-time starters like goalkeeper Bill Hamid. The back end will have questions as a result, but the attack could be surprisingly good with the addition of speedster Ruan on the flank and Mateusz Klich in the midfield. Klich was signed as a Designated Player from Leeds United, and he is the same age as Benteke.

DC United was the first dynasty in the MLS. They won the Eastern Conference in each of their first four seasons, and they won the MLS Cup in three of those four years. They became the first club to win four MLS Cups in 2004, and they have claimed the US Open Cup three times in their history. Their last title was one of the most humorous titles in MLS history, as DC United won the 2013 US Open Cup in a year where they won just three of 34 matches in league play.

This club has fallen on rough times over the last decade, largely underwhelming despite significant investment. There was a brief period where this club was exciting in 2018 and 2019 though. DC United’s addition of Wayne Rooney in June 2018 was met with plenty of fanfare, and the aging striker delivered with 23 goals in 48 games. He left after spending a little over a year with the club, and DC United has since been one of the worst teams in the MLS. DC United put together one of the worst seasons in league history in 2022, earing just 27 points in 34 matches to win the Wooden Spoon by a full seven points.
