2013 Sylvania 300 Winner - Matt Kenseth wins the 2013 Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway
For the second straight week, in the second race of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, Matt Kenseth led Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Kyle Busch to the finish line - and for Kenseth, who has struggled at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, that added a dreamlike quality to the victory.
The top seed in the Chase, Kenseth won Sunday's Sylvania 300 by .533 seconds over Busch as JGR asserted its superiority for the second consecutive week. A half hour after the race ended, the magnitude of the victory was still sinking in for the 2003 Sprint Cup champion.
Kenseth led a race-high 106 laps in winning for the seventh time this season, for the first time at the Magic Mile and for the 31st time in his career. Winning in his 500th start in the Sprint Cup series, Kenseth extended his Chase lead to 14 points over Busch.
Greg Biffle drove from sixth to third after the final restart on Lap 258 of 300. Five-time champion Jimmie Johnson finished fourth, followed by Jamie McMurray and Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Though Busch closed on Kenseth in traffic late in the race, the driver of the No. 18 Toyota acknowledged that his teammate had the superior car.
2012 Sylvania 300 Winner - Denny Hamlin fulfills prediction, wins Sylvania 300
After running out of fuel in the first race of the Chase for the Sprint Cup in Chicago, Denny Hamlin tweeted that he'll win the next leg.
Hamlin fulfilled his prophecy by ruling the Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway Sunday despite starting in 32nd place after a poor qualifying run.
Hamlin beat runner-up Jimmie Johnson by 2.675 seconds for his fifth victory this season and the 22nd of his career. His victory also gave Joe Gibbs Racing its 100th Cup victory, making it the sixth team to achieve the milestone.
The victory also moved Hamlin to third in the Chase standings, seven points behind Johnson, who grabbed a one-point lead from first-leg winner Brad Keselowski.
Pole-sitter Jeff Gordon finished third to keep his championship hopes alive while Clint Bowyer, Kasey Kahne, Keselowski and Tony Stewart ran fourth through seventh, respectively, as Chase drivers swept the top seven spots.
Explaining his guarantee, Hamlin said he used it to assure fans that he would bounce back at New Hampshire after his debacle at Chicagoland.
2011 Sylvania 300 Winner
Tony Stewart made a strong statement in his bid for a third NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) championship by winning the second race in the 2011 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup at New Hampshire Motor Speedway (NHMS). It was the second win for the driver of the No. 14 Mobil 1/Office Depot Chevrolet in six days, coming on the heels of Monday's rain-delayed win at Chicagoland Speedway.
He becomes only the second driver in the history of the Chase to win the first two races of the 10-race playoff for the title. It is his 41st career victory and his third time in Victory Lane at NHMS.
After qualifying 20th in the 43-car starting field for the Sylvania 300, Stewart worked his way up through the field to run consistently in the top-10. Good pit strategy and a car that continued to improve as the race wound down gave him the opportunity to take the lead and charge to the checkered flag. With the victory, Stewart takes control of the standings by seven points with eight races remaining.
