2014 Quicken Loans 400 Winner - Jimmie Johnson scores breakthrough victory in Quicken Loans 400

Jimmie Johnson's luck finally held up in the Irish Hills, as the six-time Cup champion finally scored a victory at Michigan International Speedway in Sunday's Quicken Loans 400.

Johnson entered the day 0-for-24 on the 2-mile oval. MIS was one of only five active tracks on the circuit where he hadn't parked his Lowe's No. 48 Chevrolet in victory prior to today.

The tracks where Johnson has still yet to win are: Homestead (Fla.), Watkins Glen (N.Y.), Chicago and Kentucky.

Johnson scored his 69th career victory and his third checkered flag in the past four Cup events, winning the race by a comfortable margin over pole-sitter Kevin Harvick.

2013 Quicken Loans 400 Winner - Greg Biffle wins at Michigan International Speedway

Greg Biffle feels right at home at Michigan International Speedway.

He took the lead for good on a late restart and ran away from the field to win Sunday's Quicken Loans 400. The No. 16 Ford driver won his second straight race here and the 19th of his career. Four of those have come at MIS.

Biffle, second a week ago at Pocono, led the pack to the restart on lap 173 and outran Martin Truex Jr. to stay out front. He led a race-best 48 laps.

Sprint Cup Series points leader Jimmie Johnson was chasing Biffle in the final laps but a cut left front tire took him off the track with two laps to go.

Kevin Harvick finished second and Truex, Kyle Busch and Tony Stewart rounded out the top five.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. took the lead shortly after the halfway point and appeared strong, but a blown engine ended his race on lap 131.

"It made a lot of damage there when it broke," he said after leading 34 laps at the track where he ended his 143-race dry spell a year ago. "I'm not sure they're going to be able to figure out what happened."

Jamie McMurray led 21 laps but fell out of contention when he blew a right front tire on lap 167.

The day's worst-looking wreck came shortly after the midway point when Kasey Kahne struck the wall near turn 2. The car caught fire as Kahne was getting out, but he stuck his arm back inside to trigger the fire-suppression system. He was not hurt.

Kurt Busch started on the outside of the front row and led the first 21 laps but spun and smacked the turn 2 wall two laps later.

There were showers after Saturday's Nationwide Series race and NASCAR gave crews a competition caution 20 laps in to assess tire wear on the clean surface.

2012 Quicken Loans 400 Winner - Dale Earnhardt Jr. Wins Quicken Loans 400

After four years and 143 races – the agonizing near-misses and all those questions about when he might finally win again – Dale Earnhardt Jr. was alone in his car, comfortably ahead of the field and only a few minutes from victory.

There was no falling short this time. Earnhardt held on smoothly at Michigan International Speedway for his first NASCAR Sprint Cup victory since 2008, and he did it in convincing fashion, beating Tony Stewart by 5.393 seconds Sunday. When the black Chevrolet with the green No. 88 crossed the finish line, Earnhardt ended a streak of 143 Cup races without a win and gave his legions of fans a thrilling reward for all their support – and patience.

The victory came almost exactly four years to the day after his last trip to Victory Lane in a Cup race. That also was in Michigan on June 15, 2008. He led for 36 laps a week ago at Pocono but made a late stop for gas instead of trying to stretch the fuel to the end.

2011 Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400 Winner - Denny Hamlin repeats as winner of the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400 at MIS

Denny Hamlin held off a charging Matt Kenseth in a five-lap shoot-out to win the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400 today at Michigan International Speedway.

Kenseth tried to pass Hamlin on the final lap, going inside through turn three and almost losing control of his car. Kenseth held on for second place.

Kyle Busch crossed the line in third; Paul Menard was fourth. Carl Edwards, who won Saturday's Nationwide race, was fifth.

Hamlin, who won the race last year, had the lead coming off of pit road with five laps to go. Dale Earnhardt Jr. went into the wall on lap 192, bringing out the final caution of the 200 lap race.

When the green flag dropped with five laps left to go, Hamlin and Kenseth pulled away from the rest of the field, setting up a two car battle for the win.

2010 Winner

Denny Hamlin's 13th career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series win in Sunday's Heluva Good!

Mr. Hamlin and his No. 11 team have adopted a slogan that seems to become more self-evident every week: "All we do is win."

"It's just been a great year so far," Mr. Hamlin said who led 123 of the total 200 laps. "It's so easy to drive cars like this and they make me look good. It's a great accomplishment to win on so many different race tracks and to be able to unload and know you're going to be competitive week in and week out. It gives you a lot of confidence. For the first time in my career I feel like we're really at that place."
