2013 Federated Auto Parts 400 Winner - Carl Edwards wins at Richmond International Speedway

When the dust settled at Richmond International Raceway, Carl Edwards was the winner, Martin Truex Jr. was in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup and Jeff Gordon and Ryan Newman were out -- all by the thinnest of margins.

Edwards streaked away from Kurt Busch to win Saturday night's Federated Auto Parts 400 after a restart with three laps left and beat Busch to the finish line, with Newman running third, Jamie McMurray fourth and Paul Menard fifth.

A struggling Joey Logano ran 22nd, but that was enough to keep eighth-place finisher Jeff Gordon out of the top 10 in the standings and out of the Chase by one point. Truex, who came home seventh, kept Gordon behind him in the closing laps and claimed the second wild-card entry into the Chase in a tiebreaker over Newman.

Busch, 12th-place finisher Greg Biffle and 13th-place Dale Earnhardt, Jr. had comparatively easy times clinching their berths in NASCAR's 10-race playoff. They left the drama to the other bubble drivers.

2012 Federated Auto Parts 400 Winner - Bowyer captures Federated Auto Parts 400 at RIR

Clint Bowyer celebrated in victory lane Saturday night at Richmond International Raceway. Jeff Gordon celebrated on pit road while climbing out his car.

One came out a winner and the other acted like a winner on a night of twists and turns and lots of rain.

Bowyer overcame a collision with Juan Pablo Montoya that resulted in a flat tire and a spin, took the lead and then made his gas go a long way to win the Federated Auto Parts 400.

Gordon, who needed to make up 12 points to overtake Kyle Busch to claim the final spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup, overcame an ill-handling car to make a late surge. Gordon picked off enough cars to finish second, which vaulted the four-time champion three points ahead of Busch for the final spot in the 12-driver field.

Gordon, smiling and shaking his head, threw up his hands as he emerged from his car.

Also happy was Kasey Kahne, who finished 12th and claimed the other available spot in the 10-race Chase, which begins next week at Chicago.

Already in the field were Denny Hamlin, Greg Biffle, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Matt Kenseth, Jimmie Johnson, Martin Truex Jr., Brad Keselowski, Clint Bowyer, Kevin Harvick and Tony Stewart.

Hamlin, who dominated the early part of the race before some pit and fuel issues, goes in as the top seed based on his four wins.

2011 Wonderful Pistachios 400 Winner - Kevin Harvick Wins Wonderful Pistachios 400 At Richmond

For most of the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup season, Kevin Harvick has been known as "The Closer," as he often made his charge for the win late in a race.

However, he might garner another nickname after his sterling fourth win of the year. In this case, Harvick might as well be called "The Dominator," as he captured Saturday night's Wonderful Pistachios 400 at Richmond International Raceway.

Leading 203 of the 400 laps at "The Action Track," the pride of Bakersfield, CA reminded his competitors and racing fans as to why he's one of the prime candidates for this year's Cup championship.

Consider the fact that he announced the closure of his Camping World Truck Series team, which certainly made his victory that much more gratifying.

2010 Air Guard 400 at Richmond - Race Results

Denny Hamlin knows all about leading laps at Richmond International Raceway. Now he knows about leading NASCAR's Chase for the Sprint Cup.

Saturday night, Hamlin led 251 of 400 laps on his way to winning the Air Guard 400.

Hamlin needed to weather raindrops, which placed the race under caution from laps 227-241, and a late-race challenge by Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Kyle Busch, who started 32nd and closed to Hamlin's rear bumper with 30 laps to go.

But Hamlin had enough to hold him off for his series-high sixth victory of the season. That means with points being re-set for the final 10 races, Hamlin has 60 bonus points, 10 more than Jimmie Johnson (five wins), who will start the Chase second in the standings.
