2014 US Cellular 250 Winner - Brad Keselowski wins US Cellular 250

A late race caution and strategy game on pit road brought instant suspense Saturday night to an otherwise uneventful U.S. Cellular 250.

A third trip to victory lane at Iowa Speedway and another giant gas pump trophy made it well worth the time and travel for Brad Keselowski.

If this indeed is the last Nationwide Series appearance at Iowa Speedway for the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup champion, he put on quite a final act for the crowd in Newton.

Keselowski ran at the point for most of the night but had to go around Michael McDowell with two laps remaining to seize his record-tying third Nationwide victory at Iowa. The Sprint Cup star spent Friday and Saturday making the 1,000mile, one-way trek back and forth between Long Pond, Pa., and Newton to fill the seat in the No. 22 for Penske Racing.

For most of the race, it looked like it would be another cruise to the checkers that would put Keselowski alongside Ricky Stenhouse Jr. for the most career wins at Iowa. He held the lead four different times, ran at the front for 146 laps and only seemed threatened in the second half of the race by former Penske teammate Sam Hornish Jr.

Then James Buescher wrecked with nine laps remaining and strategy suddenly became a factor. Keselowski veered toward pit road and the rest of the front-runners followed. Hornish gambled on four new tires and came off pit road in seventh place. The rest of the drivers in the top six opted for two tires.

McDowell restarted alongside Keselowski and momentarily appeared as if he might end his 251-race NASCAR winless skid. The 29-year-old Arizona native briefly seized the lead with two laps to go before Keselowski regained it for good.

2013 US Cellular 250 Winner - Brad Keselowski Closes Strong to Win the US Cellular 250

Brad Keselowski overcame a pit road penalty and an overheating issue to claim the win Saturday night in the US Cellular 250 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Iowa Speedway. He took the lead with 35 laps to go from Brian Vickers and then held off his Penske Racing teammate Sam Hornish Jr for the victory.

The win was the second of his career at Iowa and also was his third win of the 2013 season. Those three wins have come in his last three Nationwide Series starts. It was his 23rd career Nationwide Series win.

The victory capped a great day for Keselowski, who was the only Sprint Cup regular in the field, as his Camping World Truck Series driver Ryan Blaney won at Pocono Raceway.

The US Cellular 250 started in front of a sellout crowd with Drew Herring on his first career pole in only his 11th race. Herring was driving the No. 54 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota usually driven by Kyle Busch. Herring led early on after opening a good size lead over Regan Smith. Smith began to catch Herring and on lap 27 Smith moved to the top spot. Brian Scott passed Herring for second on lap 28.

Smith continued to lead when the first caution came out on lap 53 when Drew Herring spun out. He had faded to sixth when he lost control of the car. He did not hit anything and remained on the lead lap.

During the pit stops Brad Keselowski, who came in third, had a pit penalty for a tire rolling out of the stall. He had to restart at the tail of the longest line and as the last lead lap car in 22nd. Smith held his lead on pit road and Brian Vickers' crew got him out second.

The race restarted on lap 60. Austin Dillon restarted fourth but was on the charge and on lap 63 he took over second place. Smith was able to keep Dillon behind him until lap 86 when Dillon moved to the lead for the first time and began his dominance on the race.

2011 US Cellular 250 Results

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Roush Fenway Racing teammate Carl Edwards insist they like each other. But for the second weekend in a row, they sure didn't act like it.

Saturday night at Iowa Speedway, Stenhouse and Edwards banged doors, fenders and feelings as they fought for the victory in the U.S. Cellular 250 Nationwide Series race.

Their final banging occurred a couple of hundred feet from the finish line on the last lap, and it produced a smoky, screeching, metal-bending finish as Edwards rammed Stenhouse's car from behind and actually pushed it to the victory.
