This event has had a number of different homes and for many years it rotated between Champions Golf Club in Houston and the current home of East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. East Lake has been the site for this event since 2004. The TOUR Championship took place in early November when it first was held and both PGA Tour and European Tour players competed. That changed with the FedEx Cup in 2007 and the event has concluded the season on the PGA Tour ever since.
The TOUR Championship takes place at East Lake Golf Club, which is located about five miles from downtown Atlanta. The course is the oldest in Atlanta and was the home course of Bobby Jones. The course was established in 1904 and was designed by Tom Bendelow. Donald Ross re-designed the course and his son Rees updated it again in 1994. The course switched their front and back nines in 2016, largely due to people complaining that the 18th didn’t hold much excitement since it was a par 3. That is no longer the case as the 18th is now a par 5.

A number of marquee players have won this event including Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth, but the event has also seen a few surprise winners including Billy Horschel, Brandt Snedeker and Bill Haas. The winner of the TOUR Championship now wins the FedEx Cup but that was not always the case, as Phil Mickelson won the tournament in 2009 but it was Tiger Woods who won the FedEx Cup title. The same thing happened in 2008 when Camilo Villegas won the tournament but Vijay Singh won the FedEx Cup and it happened again in 2018 when Tiger won the tournament, but Justin Rose won the FedEx Cup title.

Tiger shot lights out in this event in 2007, as he scored a 23-under par and it was thought that record would never be approached, but Dustin Johnson shot 21-under par in 2020 and Patrick Cantlay and Rory McIlroy equaled that mark the next two years.
