There's talk in the local camp in New Mexico that Conquest Mo Money might be better served getting pointed towards the Preakness Stakes instead of the Kentucky Derby, but for the time being, he's still on the short of list 27 horses or so who could ultimately run at Churchill Downs. He's got plenty of Derby Points – 60 to be exact – though it should be noted that his connections would have to post some big bucks to get him Triple Crown nominated.
If Conquest Mo Money does have the $200k put up for his entry into the Kentucky Derby, his odds are going to come soaring down. He was 18 to 1 at the Arkansas Derby and shocked by starting at the head of the field out of an outside position and ultimately finishing second, nearly fending off the great Classic Empire in the process. You can get 50 to 1 on Conquest Mo Money right now, but that large price is largely because he's not certain to race in the Derby.
Why Conquest Mo Money Will Win the Kentucky Derby
Sometimes, horses are just flat out winners, and that appears to be what we have with Conquest Mo Money. Sure, he didn't run up against much at Sunland Park early in his career, but when he came to the Arkansas Derby and finished second, it was proof that good horses are running all over the nation. The fact that Conquest Mo Money hasn't finished worse than second in any race in his career, including a few in which he was a longshot to get anything done tells the tale of a true underdog story that shouldn't be forgotten.
Why Conquest Mo Money Won't Win the Kentucky Derby
You can't win a race you don't run in, and that's the biggest concern with Conquest Mo Money. But of course, if you go under the assumption that he is going to be in the Run for the Roses, Conquest Mo Money still has a big problem if he can't start towards the head of the pack. In his last two races, he started with outside posts and had to exert a lot of energy just to get to the head of the field. He failed to do so at the Sunland Derby and succeeded at the Arkansas Derby, and that's proof if he doesn't successfully reach the front, he's going to have some problems finishing the job. Good luck with that at Churchill Downs against a field of 20.
The Final Verdict
We want to like Conquest Mo Money, but we can't bring ourselves to bet on a question mark right now. If he runs in the Derby and ultimately has a 30 to 1 or greater price on his head, we won't have any hesitations putting him in our exotics. We wouldn't be expecting a ton at that point, but if Conquest Mo Money did happen to get into the triple, that payday would end up being a big, big one for those holding winning tickets.
