2017-Horses-Lone-Sailor-Betting-OddsKentucky Derby Betting: Perhaps one of the most surprising horses to qualify for the Kentucky Derby is Lone Sailor. He has finished first only once in eight races, claiming victory in his second maiden race.

At his first graded stakes, Lone Sailor performed somewhat well. He wasn’t seen as much of a threat to hit the board at the Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity at 17.50-1, but he ended up finishing third. It was a solid performance, particularly for a Grade 1 Stakes Race.

Unfortunately, it would be a while until he hit the board in a graded stakes race again. Lone Sailor came in fifth at the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes as a two-year-old, and then he finished a disappointing night at the Lecomte Stakes.

It looked like his Derby hopes were dashed after that performance. His last chance to make it back to Churchill Downs was with a strong finish at the Louisiana Derby, and he did just that. Lone Sailor lost to Noble Indy at the line, but the second place result gave him the points he needed to make the field.

The Kentucky Derby will go to post on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at 6:34 p.m. ET at Churchill Downs in Louisville. Catch the Kentucky Derby live on NBC.

Lone Sailor’s jockey will be making his Derby debut. James Graham has never rode a Kentucky Derby horse before and will be looking to make his first ride a memorable one.

Why Lone Sailor Will Win the Kentucky Derby

If you’re betting on Lone Sailor, you’re hoping that the horse is a late bloomer. He had only cracked a 90 speed rating once before his last race, but then he posted a 100 at the Louisiana Derby. It was a significant step up from what we had seen in the past and he will need to repeat that to have a shot.

Why Lone Sailor Won't Win the Kentucky Derby

This horse has only had one good race throughout his career. Other than that, he has had pretty marginal results. He has not performed well against other Derby horses and he will likely have a hard time with the early pace out of the gate.

The Final Verdict

Lone Sailor has almost no chance of hitting the board here. He needed the race of his life in order to make it to the Derby, and it’s unlikely he’ll be able to muster that speed once more.
