Belmont Stakes Betting: Showing a lot of promise with a third-place finish at the Preakness, Tenfold will get another chance at the Belmont Stakes, which will be his fifth career start. Much like Justify, Tenfold didn’t race as a 2-year-old with trainer Steve Asmussen allowing the colt to grow into his frame. He won his debut race in February, running away from the field for a near six-length victory at Oaklawn and followed that with another win five weeks later. Facing stiffer competition at the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby Tenfold faded to fifth-place. However, he had a gutsy effort at Pimlico rallying for a third-place finish behind Justify and Bravazo.

According to Asmussen, Tenfold has a lot of talent and it was on display at Pimlico. At 26-1 on the final odds, Tenfold was the longest shot in the eight-horse Preakness, yet he rallied from the middle of the pack to close strong, missing out on a second-place finish by a neck while coming up about three-quarters of a length behind Justify. Oddsmakers took notice as well, pegging Tenfold among the favorites at +600 on opening lines. Sired by 2007 Preakness winner Curlin, Tenfold is taking after his old man as a late bloomer on the racing stage.
Why Tenfold Will Win the Belmont Stakes
He just might be inexperienced enough to know that he shouldn’t win this race. All five of Tenfold’s starts have been over a mile, so the distance shouldn’t be a problem. He was moving well down the stretch at Pimlico and overtook Kentucky Derby runner-up Good Magic, missing out on a second-place finish by a neck.
Asmussen didn’t push his colt this year, spacing out his races by at least a month. The three weeks between the Preakness and Belmont Stakes could be perfect timing against the favorite, who is sure to be tired after a difficult stretch with the last two races in the mud. And of course his father is legendary Curlin, who won the Preakness in 2007 and was the highest money winner in North America from 2008 to 2016.
Why Tenfold Won't Win the Belmont Stakes
What makes Tenfold a candidate to pull off an upset are also what likely dooms him at Belmont. He has only two graded races under his belt and that inexperience against a larger, more competitive field could be a problem. Also, he’s used to having a little more time between races so the three-week turnaround, which is a standard time for most horses, isn’t for Tenfold.
The Final Verdict
As well as Tenfold ran at the Preakness, there were still a few mistakes that proved costly. And those came from inexperience, according to Asmussen and jockey Ricardo Santana Jr. A slow start negated a powerful finish as the colt broke from the middle of pack to finish less than a length off the lead. He has a tremendous build and strong legs, and he’s a mover. Asmussen predicts good things for Tenfold and he could be a contender at Belmont, but just not strong enough to overtake the field.
