Stunning all-Italian final on tap for U.S. Open as Flavia Pennetta races Roberta Vinci

2015-Womens-Final-Betting-Odds

Roberta Vinci was a 10 to 1 choice of the oddsmakers in the semifinals against Serena Williams.

She pulled off the shocking upset, and now she has to turn around just 24 hours later to take on fellow countrywoman Flavia Pennetta in the U.S. Open women's final.

ODDS ANALYSIS

Pennetta pulled off a massive upset in her own right as well in the semis when she knocked off second-seeded Simona Halep in straight sets, losing just four games in the process.

She was nearly a 3 to 1 underdog on Friday after sitting out for a couple days due to rain, but all of a sudden, she is the -200 favorite to capture the U.S. Open.

Keep in mind that this is the first Grand Slam final for either of these players, so this is going to end up being a bit of an unpredictable match from that standpoint. Vinci can be had at +170 on the U.S. Open betting lines.

FATIGUE A FACTOR FOR VINCI

Vinci is definitely getting the short end of the stick here, not that she is going to mind. Just the fact that she is still playing in the U.S. Open is nothing short of a miracle, knowing that she knocked off the seemingly unbeatable Serena Williams on Friday.

Still, to turn around just under 24 hours after playing a physical grind of a three-set clash against Williams and to play the biggest match of her career is going to be a daunting task, even knowing that Pennetta also played on Friday. At least Pennetta made awfully short work out of Halep, finishing the match in just 59 minutes, and she was the first one on the court on Friday.

It should also be worth noting that Vinci has played in four straight three-set matches here at the U.S. Open, and at some point, that has to get tiring.

SERVE NOT STRIKING FOR PENNETTA

Normally speaking on the hard court surfaces, you expect to see a lot of aces, and if nothing else, a lot of good first serves coming from all of the players. Pennetta though, has just one ace in her last five sets of action, stunning for a woman who has made it this far in Flushing.

Pennetta though, does a really nice job of winning her first service points when she gets them in. She won 20-of-33 points on her first serve against Halep in the semifinals, and she is winning 68 percent of her first service points overall in this tournament. Her problem though, is getting that serve in. She is faulting on over 42 percent of her first serves.

ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION

The real key here is going to be fatigue. These women just aren't used to playing back-to-back in such grueling matches, and Halep didn't take nearly enough out of Pennetta to give her any issues.

You can bet that for the next 24 hours, Pennetta is going to be thinking about getting her first serves in and running Vinci around the court to tire her out. We suspect that exactly that is going to happen, and in the end, she'll end up taking this match in straight sets to claim her first ever Grand Slam championship.
