In fact, the top 5 in the WTA world rankings make up the top five favorites on the opening odds board for the year?s first Grand Slam event. Defending champion and No. 2 ranked Aryna Sabalenka is slotted as the third favorite behind No. 3 ranked Elena Rybakina. The top three all opened with odds of +450 or shorter suggesting a three-person race to the title. Coco Gauff is listed as the fourth favorite with Jessica Pegula rounding out the top 5 favorites, though she?s well off the pace.

Sabalenka entered last year?s tournament as the No. 5 seed and dropped only one set en route to her first career major singles title. That set loss came in the final when she rallied to defeat Rybakina 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. History is not on Sabalenka?s side, though, since there hasn?t been a back-to-back winner since Victoria Azarenka won her second straight Australian Open in 2013. And since then there have been nine different champions in the past 11 tournaments. The field gets an infusion of talent with former champions Naomi Osaka and Caroline Wozniacki as well as Elina Svitolina all returning after recently giving birth.

The 2024 Australian Open runs from January 14-27 at Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Still, Swiatek earned the No. 1 overall seed for the tournament based on recent results. Since losing in the Round of 16 at the U.S. Open last September, Swiatek is 17-1 with 16 consecutive match wins of which 13 were won in straight sets. Just a few months ago in Mexico Swiatek knocked off five of the world?s top 7 players all in straight sets regaining her perch atop the rankings with a 6-3, 6-2 win over then No. 1 Sabalenka.

Facing a tough schedule for a No. 1 seed, Swiatek?s road to a first AO title isn?t going to be easy. She opens with a test against 2020 WTA Player of the Year and that year?s AO champion Sofia Kenin.

A two-time former AO champ, Osaka has some value at her price, though her maternity leave puts her behind most players in the field in terms of conditioning. Osaka didn?t compete in 2023 and recently got a little tune-up in Brisbane winning one match before falling to Karolina Pliskova.

Gauff has value and is the most likely player not among the top 3 favorites to have a chance. The reigning U.S. Open champion also reached the quarterfinals at Roland Garros last year falling to Swiatek in hotly-contested match. She also enters on a roll having won five matches with only one set loss at the ASB Classic in New Zealand earlier this month.

While the wealth is spread around on the women?s tour it seems to stay within a particular group of players. The door did open for others, though, when former world No. 1 and 2022 AO champ Ashleigh Barty retired and the suspension of two-time Grand Slam winner Simon Halep. Azarenka has experience and success in Melbourne winning back-to-back titles in 2012 and 2013. She returned to the semifinals last year knocking off top 10 seeds Madison Keys and Jessica Pegula before falling to Rybakina in straight sets.

Bet the Australian Open at BookMaker

It seems as though the top three or four players are always battling each other at major tournaments. There is the occasional exception like last year?s Wimbledon champ Marketa Vondrousova, who became the first unseeded player to win. It is clich? to back the favorite, but Swiatek is at another level and she?s dominated on hard courts during her career. The road to the quarterfinals is tough, but she?ll be battle-tested when she gets there.

BookMaker offers play-by-play betting odds for live sporting events every day! Naomi Osaka was the only player in that period to win it twice. There have been four different winners in the past four years. Of course, Serena Williams remains the best-remembered champion of the U.S. Open. Williams won six U.S. Open titles, including three from 2012 through 2014. Also, her sister, Venus Williams, won two US Open titles in 2000 and 2001.

Because of the changing of the guard, the gambling dynamics have changed dramatically. The old days of the casual sector mindlessly betting on Serena Williams are over. Squares have difficulty deciding who to take in Grand Slam women?s tennis events because they are unfamiliar with the players. Sharps have better overall knowledge of the new lineup, but the sport's parity makes handicapping it a supreme challenge.

In 2023 three different women won the three Grand Slam events. Aryna Sabalenka won the Australian Open, Iga Swiatek won the French Open, and Marketa Vondrousova won Wimbledon.

Iga Swiatek

Iga Swiatek, age 22, is a native of Warsaw, Poland. She ranks #1 in the WTA rankings. Swiatek has 15 career singles titles and a record of 263-63.

In the 2023 season, Swiatek won four singles titles and has a singles record of 50-8. She has a total of over $5 million in prize money.

At Wimbledon, Swiatek suffered a disappointing quarterfinal loss to Elina Svitolina. But at the French Open, Switek won the championship against Karolina Muchova. It was the third French Open championship in Swiatek?s career. But at the Australian Open, Swiatek flopped with a fourth-round loss to Elena Rybakina.

Aryna Sabalenka

Aryna Sabalenka, age 25, is a native of Minsk, Belarus. She is #2 in the WTA rankings. She has 13 career singles titles and a career record of 346-169.

This year, Sabalenka has three singles titles and a record of 41-9 with $5.7 million in prize money. Sabalenka has one Grand Slam championship in her career. She won the 2023 Australian Open.

In Grand Slam action this year, Sabalenka was eliminated in the Wimbledon semifinal by Ons Jabeur. At the French Open, Sabalenka was eliminated in the semifinals by Karolina Muchova. In the Australian Open, Sabalenka defeated Elena Rybakina in the final to score her first Grand Slam triumph.

Elena Rybakina

Four on the WTA rankings is Elena Rybakina. Rybakina, age 24, is a native of Moscow, Russia. She has two singles titles in her career with a career record of 280-127.

In 2023, Rybakina has two singles titles with a record of 38-10. She earned $4.5 million in 2023. In 2022, she claimed the Wimbledon championship for her only Grand Slam title.

This year at Wimbledon, Rybakina was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Ons Jabeur. At the French Open, Rybakina was eliminated in the third round by Sara Sorribes Tormo. And at the Australian Open, Rybakina lost the Final to Aryna Sabalenka.

Jessica Pegula

Jessica Pegula, age 29, is a native of Buffalo, New York. Pegula has three wins and a record of 378-227 in her career. She is ranked #3 in the world.

This year, Pegula has won a singles title and a record of 42-13. She has never won a Grand Slam event. Her best finish was as a quarterfinalist in all four Grand Slam events.

Bookmaker 2023 U.S. Open Women?s Free Pick

Iga Swiatek has a proven record of success at the U.S. Open and is the world's top-ranked player.

Bookmaker 2023 U.S. Open Women?s Best Bet: Iga Swiatek

BookMaker offers play-by-play betting odds for live sporting events every day! The 10-time Australian Open champion has been nearly unbeatable in Melbourne over his career and opened as a negative odds favorite in a quest for his 25th Grand Slam title. A three-time Grand Slam winner last year, Djokovic had his sweep of the sports? biggest tournaments stopped by second favorite Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon in a match that went the distance. Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev are the only other players with shorter than 10/1 odds on the opening betting board.

With Djokovic winning four of the last five AO titles and with nine of his wins coming since 2011, there?s been little room for anyone else to claim the hardware. He?s won every major tournament at least three times with a record 10 triumphs in Melbourne. So you really have to ask yourself what more can he do and how motivated is he now that he?s reached his late 30s? Well, it appears as though he?s as motivated as ever thanks in part to his newest rival Carlos Alcaraz. You see, it was Alcaraz who prevented Djokovic from winning all four majors last year taking the title at Wimbledon.

So in 2024 all Djokovic did was raise the bar telling folks he wanted a sweep of the majors as well as the singles gold medal at the Paris Olympics. ?I have always the highest ambitions and goals. That?s not going to be different this year,? he said.

When you think of dominance the idea of Djokovic at this tournament comes to mind. If the number of wins isn?t a sign then look at his 89-8 sets record. That?s equally if not more impressive. Behind Djokovic on the odds board are the next three highest ranked players according to the ATP. Alcaraz briefly held down the No. 1 spot last year beating Djokovic in the Wimbledon final. And since that loss Djokovic has also been defeated twice by No. 4 Jannik Sinner. Former world No. 1 and current No. 3 Daniil Medvedev reached the AO finals in consecutive years losing to Djokovic in 2021 and to Nadal in 2022.

I can?t see anyone outside this quartet winning the first Grand Slam of the year, but stranger things have happened. Djokovic, Alcaraz and Medvedev, along with Nadal, have combined to win the last 13 majors. Dominic Thiem at the 2020 U.S. Open was the last player not in this group to win a Grand Slam. And Sinner has yet to win a major or even compete for one. Things will change, they always do, but my money is on one of the favorites.

Bet the Australian Open at BookMaker

With two Grand Slam titles in the last two years, including a win over Djokovic at Wimbledon in 2023, Alcaraz is the only player other than Joker to likely claim the title. I probably would?ve faded Djokovic due to his age and career accomplishments, but seeing he?s healthy and willing to work for a goal of securing the ?Golden Slam? his motivation can?t be questioned. There?s no value backing him at negative odds which is why a little play with Alcaraz makes sense.

BookMaker offers play-by-play betting odds for live sporting events every day! It was the fifth different men?s singles champion in the last five U.S. Open events. As is the case in the women?s singles side, the men are undergoing a transformation of increased parity and new blood replacing the old.

Because of this changing of the guard on the men?s side, the casual gambling sector is struggling to adjust. Novak Djokovic is the only name brand that Squares are familiar with. The casual market?s lack of familiarity with Carlos Alcaraz left the door open for sharps to take advantage of the enhanced value. That might still be the case in the 2023 U.S. Open, but not to the extent of the past.

Carlos Alcaraz

Carlos Alcaraz is ranked #1 in the world on the ATP charts. Alcaraz has 12 career wins with a record of 139-36. Alcaraz, age 20, is a native of El Palmar, Murcia, Spain. Alcaraz has two career Grand Slam wins. He won the 2022 U.S. Open and the 2023 Wimbledon championships.

This year Carlos Alcaraz has six singles titles with a record of 49-5 and $7.9 million in prize money. Alcaraz defeated Novak Djokovic in the final to clinch the championship at Wimbledon. At the French Open, Alcaraz lost the semifinal to Novak Djokovic. He was forced to withdraw from the Australian Open because of a hamstring injury.

Novak Djokovic

Novak Djokovic, age 36, is ranked #2 on the ATP charts. Djokovic has 94 career wins with a record of 1064-211. Djokovic is arguably the greatest men?s player in the modern era. He was ranked #1 for 389 weeks through 12 different years. He finished #1 on the ATP rankings seven times. Djokovic has a record 67 big, 23 majors, and 38 masters titles. He is the only male player to be the defending champion of all four Grand Slam events. Djokovic has a triple career Grand Slam. Djokovic is a native of Belgrade, Serbia.

This year, Djokovic has three wins with a record of 33-5 and $6.5 million of prize money. In 2023, he lost the Wimbledon final to Carlos Alcaraz. Djokovic won the French Open Final against Casper Ruud.
