Tennis Odds - U.S. Open Preview

2017-Tennis-US-Open-Betting-Lines

Roger Federer is favored on the men’s side to win the last Grand Slam event of the year, the U.S. Open, while Garbine Muguruza is favored on the women’s side. Federer has a good path to winning the title, especially with Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka out due to injuries, while Muguruza should also benefit with Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka out of action. Let’s look at the odds, players to bet and players to fade.

Roger Federer

The U.S. Open should be Federer’s to win. He comes in playing well and almost all of his tough competition is out of action. Federer has won the U.S. Open five times in his career and anything less than a title would be a surprise. Even at odds of +165 he has value. Federer shouldn’t have any problem with Nadal, as this event is not on clay, so the only real threat would appear to be Zverev.

This would be the 20th Grand Slam singles title for Federer if he gets it and there doesn’t appear to be much in his way.

Alexander Zverev

If you are going to bet against Federer then the player to take is Zverev, who has already won Masters events in Rome and Montreal. He beat Djokovic and Federer to win those two titles. Zverev also won in Montpellier, Munich and Washington. He has not had much success in Grand Slam events but he did take Nadal to five sets in the Australia Open and he made the fourth round at Wimbledon.

Player to Fade

Rafael Nadal

I am going to put Nadal here even though he is the top seed. He won the U.S. Open in 2010 and in 2013 and he is having a very good season with wins at Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Madrid and in the French Open but I don’t see him beating Federer in New York and I am not so sure that he will even get a chance to face Federer, as I see him getting upset before the semifinals.

Players to Bet

Garbine Muguruza

It is tough to make a case for any particular player on the women’s side but Muguruza should do well. She didn’t handle the pressure of being a champion after winning the French Open last year but she has rebounded this year and looks better after winning at Wimbledon. She dominated Simona Halep in Cincinnati and should be ready to win in New York.

Karolina Pliskova

The world number one only has two titles this year, as she won in Brisbane and Doha. She did finish as the runner-up in last year’s U.S. Open, losing to Angelique Kerber. She couldn’t handle Muguruza in Cincinnati, but she may get another chance in New York.

Johanna Konta

The women’s side is really wide open and you can make a case for a lot of players winning, including Konta who is overdue for a breakthrough win. She has won two titles this year and is up to No. 7 in the world.

Player to Fade

Angelique Kerber

Kerber is the defending champion but she has done next to nothing this year. She has yet to win a single tournament this year and has only made one final. The women’s field is wide open but it is still hard to see Kerber going very far.
