The top two players in the world, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer headline the field for the Shanghai Rolex Masters this week. Nadal is the top seed and the favorite to win this event, while Federer is the second seed and the second choice in the betting odds. This event is also a key one for a number of other players as they look to pick up points in order to qualify for the ATP World Tour Finals in London. Top Contenders

This event is extremely top heavy, as Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray are not in the field. It should be all about Nadal and Federer and perhaps Zverev. Nadal has actually never won this event and his record in it is just 12-7. Federer won this event in 2014 and has a record of 13-4 in this tournament. Zverev is 2-1 in this event in his career. It is really hard to see anyone other than the top three winning this event. Oddsmakers are thinking along the same line, although they do have Nick Kyrgios and Grigor Dimitrov listed at +1200. Perhaps one of those two players could pull off a shocker and reach the final, but I am not betting on it.

Seeds

  1. Rafael Nadal
  2. Roger Federer
  3. Alexander Zverev
  4. Marin Cilic
  5. Dominic Thiem
  6. Grigor Dimitrov
  7. Pablo Carreno Busta
  8. David Goffin
  9. Roberto Bautista Agut
  10. Sam Querrey
  11. Kevin Anderson
  12. John Isner
  13. Nick Kyrgios
  14. Jack Sock
  15. Lucas Pouille
  16. Juan Martin del Potro

Matchups to Watch

Looking ahead it could be Nadal taking on Dimitrov in one of the quarterfinals. Nadal has won 9 of their 10 previous meetings. Another of the quarterfinals that is projected has Zverev taking on Thiem and in their previous five meetings it is Thiem who has won four of them.

The projected semifinals based on the seeds would have Nadal taking on Cilic and Federer vs. Zverev. The previous meetings have Nadal holding a 4-1 edge against Cilic, while Federer and Zverev have split their previous four meetings.

If Nadal and Federer meet in the final, the numbers favor Nadal, as he has won 23 of the 37 career meetings against Federer, but it is worth noting that Federer has won all three meetings this year.

Event Notes

This event features 56 players, with 16 players seeded. The top eight seeds all have byes into the second round. Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic have combined to win six of the last seven titles. The race is on for the last spot in the ATP Finals. No. 7 seed Pablo Carreno Busta, No. 8 seed David Goffin, No. 10 seed Sam Querrey and No. 11 seed Kevin Anderson are battling to get that last spot. Goffin currently holds the last spot entering this event.

Tennis Picks

Nadal has never won this event in Shangahi but this should be his best chance, as his only real threat appears to be Federer and it is not a given that Federer even makes the final. I will take Nadal as my top choice and also go with Zverev as a longshot at +900.
