ODDS ANALYSIS

Serena Williams isn't going to be playing in Stuttgart next week, and with her taking the week off and Maria Sharapova still suspended, this is a wide open tournament. Agnieszka Radwanska and the defending champ of this event, Angelique Kerber are the top two seeds, and they're sure to be the favorites. However, we suspect there won't be a woman in this field who will be lined at less than 5 to 1, and perhaps even 7 to 1 to win the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix.

A LOOK BACK

It's tough to believe, but Kerber was an unseeded player last year at this time. She always had a bit of a home court advantage as the only German player which made it out of the second round of the event. However, she really wasn't ever supposed to get into the last eight, especially after being drawn into the bracket with the top-seeded Sharapova.

That said, Kerber beat Sharapova in three sets, dominating the third 6-1 en route to victory. It was one of the many upsets in 2015 in Stuttgart, as No. 3 Petra Kvitova was taken out in straight sets in her first match, while fifth-seed Ana Ivanovic never even got out of the first round.

As a result, Kerber ended up playing unseeded American, Madison Brengle in the semifinals. She won that match, then took out Caroline Wozniacki in the finale.

PLAYER TO BET

Garbine Muguruza – Muguruza is only 22 years old, but she's already made a real splash in the WTA. She's reached at least the quarterfinals of the French Open in two consecutive years, and now she's ready to take Stuttgart by storm. Let's not forget that many of the top women on clay courts aren't going to be playing at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, and that might be just the opportunity the Spaniard needs to get through this bracket without issues. She hasn't had a remarkable year, but now that she's getting back to her preferred surface, we'd bet that Muguruza is set for a nice run in Stuttgart next week.

PLAYER TO FADE

Angelique Kerber – All of this talk about Kerber, and we're going to consider fading her? It seems counterintuitive, but she withdrew from last week's Volvo Cars Open due to illness in a match she was probably losing to Sloane Stephens anyway had she not retired. She hasn't had a fantastic history on clay in her career, and though she did get to the semifinals in Charleston last week, she didn't have to play against anyone who was ranked in the Top 30 in the world along the way.
