Adrian Mannarino and Pablo Carreno Busta are the top two choices to win the Kremlin Cup, which begins on Monday in Moscow. Mannarino is listed as the favorite at odds of +450, while Carreno Busta is the second choice at odds of +550. It is somewhat surprising that Mannarino is favored, as he is ranked 29th in the world, while Carreno Busta is ranked 11th. Carreno Busta is the top seed in this tournament and he is the defending champion.

Top Contenders

Do the oddsmakers know something with Mannarino? He has played well of late and beaten some good players like Sam Querrey and Milos Raonic. He also has a favorable draw and wouldn’t have to face Carreno Busta until the final, but Mannarino has played this event just once and he lost in the opening round.

Carreno Busta made the semifinals at the U.S. Open but hasn’t played well since. He was upset by Steve Darcis in Beijing last time out. Much of his success this season has come on clay, as he is just 14-10 on hard courts. The big positive is that Carreno Busta is 5-0 all-time in his event.

Ramos-Vinolas is the second seed but he is just 1-3 all-time in this event. Kohlschreiber, Ramos-Vinolas, Dzumhur and Rublev are also listed at single-digit odds. Kohlschreiber is 10-6 all-time in this tournament. Dzumhur won the tournament in St. Petersburg, as he defeated Fabio Fognini in the final, so he could be a nice darkhorse. He is 1-1 all-time in this event. Rublev played well in Beijing, as he came from behind to beat Tomas Berdych but he is 0-2 all-time in this event.

Seeds

  1. Pablo Carreno Busta
  2. Albert Ramos Vinolas
  3. Adrian Mannarino
  4. Philipp Kohlschreiber
  5. Andrey Rubley
  6. Damir Dzumhur
  7. Paolo Lorenzi
  8. Karen Khachanov (withdrew)

Matchups to Watch

The most interesting first round matchup has Andrey Kuznetsov taking on Daniil Medvedev with the winner taking on Carreno Busta in the second round. Surprisingly, these two have never met. Medvedev is playing awful of late, losing his last eight matches, while Kuznetsov is 3-4 in his last seven matches.

In the round of 16 we should see Lukas Rosol taking on Mannarino. These two have met five times with Rosol winning three of the five matches. The best of the quarterfinal matches could be Kohlschreiber taking on Dzumhur. These two met for the only time last year and it was Kohlschreiber winning in three sets.

The likely semifinal matchups could have Kohlschreiber taking on Carreno Busta. These two have met twice with Kohlschreiber winning both times. The other semifinal could have Mannarino taking on Ramos Vinolas. Mannarino has won three of their previous five meetings.

The final could have Carreno Busta taking on Ramos Vinolas or Mannarino. Carreno Busta has never faced Mannarino, while he has defeated Ramos Vinolas in two of their previous three matches.

Event Notes

The 2017 Kremlin Cup, also known as the VTB Kremlin Cup, will be the 28th edition of this tournament. It is part of the ATP World Tour 250 Series and played at Olympic Stadium in Moscow, Russia. The event takes place from October 16 through 22. Carreno Busta is the defending champion, while Marin Cilic won in 2013 and 2014.

Tennis Picks

I think both of the favorites are overvalued in this event, so I will take a shot with two of the darkhorses and go with Kohlschreiber at +600 and Dzumhur at +800.
