2021 U.S. Open Men’s Tennis Betting

To no one’s surprise, Novak Djokovic is the favorite to win the 2021 Men’s US Open. Djokovic has the chance to be just the second men’s tennis player in the Open Era to win a single-season Grand Slam, as he won the Australian Open, the French Open, and Wimbledon this year. He has the opportunity to make history in another way too. Currently, Djokovic is tied with contemporary legends Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer for the most Grand Slam titles in men’s tennis history with 20 majors. A victory at Flushing Meadows would break that tie, making it hard to dispute that Djokovic is the greatest men’s tennis player of his generation.

The 2021 US Open will take place from August 30 to September 12, 2021. The last Grand Slam event of the tennis season will take place at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City, New York.

Favorite

A lot of starpower is missing from the 2021 US Open, clearing the way for Djokovic to be an odds-on favorite. Roger Federer withdrew from the field because of a lingering knee injury, and Rafael Nadal hasn’t been at his best due to a foot injury and is shutting himself down the rest of the year. Last year’s winner Dominic Thiem announced he would be unable to compete due to a wrist injury last week too, thinning the ranks at the top.

That has made Novak Djokovic an inevitability in the eyes of many observers. Djokovic has won the US Open three times (2011, 2015, and 2018), and he was the favorite last year. However, he was disqualified after accidentally hitting a line judge in the neck with a tennis ball. Djokovic will be more composed in 2021, and he won’t let emotions get the better of him this time.

Other Contenders

The oddsmakers have given Daniil Medvedev the best chance of knocking off Djokovic. Medvedev has yet to win a major, but he made it to the finals of the 2019 US Open. He nearly erased a 2-0 deficit against Nadal in the finals before losing the fifth set to just miss out on his first Grand Slam title. The Russian is currently the No. 2 ranked player in the world, and he has already won three events this year including his fourth Masters event.

Alexander Zverev is still searching for his first Grand Slam victory too. The 24-year-old made the finals of a major for the first time last year at this event, but he fell to Dominic Thiem after winning the first two sets 6-2, 6-4. Zverev is riding high after winning the gold medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Japan, besting Karen Khachanov 6-3, 6-1 in the finals.

The only other player with reasonable odds to win the US Open is Stefanos Tsitsipas. The talented Greek youngster has yet to advance past the third round of the US Open, but he should make it further than that in 2021. Tsitsipas made it to the finals of the 2021 French Open before losing to Djokovic, and he is currently the No. 3 ranked player in the world.

Longshots

There isn’t a real longshot to like, but the value is there if you want to roll the dice. Outside of the top four players, everyone else is at least 40-1. That’s because Djokovic, Federer, and Nadal have dominated this sport for almost two decades, so players at the next tier are not as well known by fans and observers alike.

Men’s US Open Picks

Djokovic is a deserved favorite, but it might be best to go against him here. It’s late in the season and the toll of months of tennis might be affecting his body like it has with Nadal and Federer. Medvedev is a solid choice, as he has the youth and energy to take advantage of a Djokovic misstep.
