Bet on 2019 Women's World Cup - United States vs. Chile

The good news for Chile is they aren’t going to be the team that the United States beats by the most this World Cup. Chile have a much better defense than Thailand, and they won’t allow the Stars and Stripes to run roughshod over them to the tune of 13 goals. However, it’s pretty likely they get dominated from start to finish. Chile are just holding out hope for a respectable finish.

Don't miss this Women’s World Cup match from Parc des Princes in Paris, France at 12 p.m. ET on Sunday, June 16, 2019. Catch every moment of the match live on FOX.

Odds Analysis

This is Chile’s first Women’s World Cup, and they are looking for their first result at this tournament. They qualified as a result of finishing runner-up to Brazil at Copa America, and La Roja nearly earned a draw against Sweden on Tuesday.

From the opening whistle, Chile didn’t have much intention of attacking, instead playing for a draw. They finished the match with just five shots, one shot on goal, and 31 percent of possession. Chile’s decision to play conservatively nearly paid off as Sweden huffed and puffed but couldn’t blow their doors down until late. The Swedes finally broke through in the 83rd minute, and they added another four minutes into extra time for a 2-0 win.

There was never a real chance of Thailand competing with the United States, but no one thought the US would run it up like they did in their opener. The US went to halftime up 3-0, and it seemed like that would be good enough. Of course, they decided that wasn’t enough as they notched four goals in six minutes shortly after halftime and ended up winning 13-0. Alex Morgan already has more goals than almost any other team at the World Cup after netting five times, and she is the runaway favorite to win the Golden Boot at the moment.

Chile Player to Watch

It’s not a bad strategy for Chile to play for draws. They have one of the best goalkeepers in the world in Christiane Endler, and she is the most talented player on the roster. Endler is the captain for La Roja, and she was just named the best goalkeeper in France after a stellar season with Paris Saint-Germain. She will have a busy day on Sunday.

United States Player to Watch

If you score five goals in the previous game, it’s hard to not highlight you. Morgan is the most prominent star on a team loaded with talent, and she made the most of being on such a great squad on Tuesday. Her five goals are the most by a player in Women’s World Cup history, and she could end up crushing the record for most goals scored in a single tournament. She should have plenty of chances against Chile.

We’ve heard a lot of criticism about the USWNT after their rout of Thailand, so I think they will take their foot off the gas pedal a little quicker here. Chile are no real threat on the attack, but they will be good enough in defense to not let the Americans rack up the goals to the level they did on Tuesday.

I see Endler making a couple big saves that lead to Chile covering the goal line. However, the USWNT will never be in danger of not getting the win.
