United States vs. Thailand Match Preview

The United States will kick off their bid for a fourth star above their logo on Tuesday. The USWNT are massive favorites against Thailand, and anything other than a multiple goal victory for the Stars and Stripes would be a shock. This is Thailand’s second appearance at the World Cup, so they don’t have the pedigree of the Americans, and their performance over the last year hasn’t inspired a lot of confidence.

Don't miss this Women’s World Cup match from Stade Auguste-Delaune in Reims, France at 3 p.m. ET on Tuesday, June 11, 2019. Catch every moment of the match live on FOX.

Odds Analysis

On the eve of the 2019 World Cup kicking off, the tournament favorites are the United States. The USWNT have looked strong over the last year, and as the defending champions, they are the team to beat. They are 20-3-1 in their last 24 matches, and the USWNT have beat many quality teams during that stretch. The USWNT finished off their tune-up by beating their last four opponents by a combined score of 17-0.

Their results against the other elite teams in this competition has left something to be desired though. The Stars and Stripes were forced to settle for 2-2 draws against both Japan and England at the SheBelieves Cup, and they allowed Australia to net three goals in a win in Colorado in April. The result that gives the most cause for pause is the 3-1 loss to France in Le Havre in January.

Thailand made it to their second straight World Cup after making the semifinals of the Asian Cup. At the 2015 World Cup, the Chaba Kaew were hammered 4-0 by both Norway and Germany, but they did defeat the Ivory Coast 3-2 to score their first World Cup victory with Orathai Srimanee netting a brace.

This team has really struggled over the past 10 months though. Thailand have lost 11 of their last 12 matches, and the only reprieve was a 4-0 win over Hungary in Cyprus. In their final two games before the World Cup, they lost 3-0 to France and 6-1 to Belgium.

Thailand Player to Watch

Suchawadee Nildhamrong (also known as Miranda Nild) has a bright future. She became known to American fans during her time at the University of California, and the midfielder has 12 goals in 17 appearances with the national team. While most of Thailand’s team is undersized compared to other rosters, Nild’s height gives her an advantage and makes her the most dangerous player on the Chaba Kaew.

United States Player to Watch

The strength of the USWNT is up top, and Alex Morgan could have a big tournament. Morgan is one of three co-captains for the Americans, and she is one of seven players in USWNT history with over 100 goals in her career. She is buoyed by two other incredible strikers in Carli Lloyd and Megan Rapinoe, and that trio could light up the scoreboard here.

Originally, I was going to take Thailand to cover. In the few months before the World Cup, the USWNT were winning games, but they were struggling in the final third.

However, these teams met less than three years ago, and Thailand had no answer for the Americans. The USWNT scored three goals in the first five minutes in a 9-0 rout that was the worst loss in Thailand’s history.

The size and talent disparity is going to be very noticeable early, so I’ll lay the goals and expect a rout.
