Soccer Odds - Cameroon vs. Australia Match Preview

2017-Confederation-Cup-Cameroon-vs.-Australia-(FS1)-Bet-Online

Australia and Cameroon are both in a lot of trouble in Group B of the Confederations Cup. They’ve both been beaten in their first match here in Russia, and a second loss for either one would almost certainly be the end of the dream for either to sneak out of a very top-heavy group. A point for these teams probably won't do any good either, so both teams are going to have to go for broke.

Don't miss the Confederations Cup action from Krestovsky Stadium in Saint Petersburg at 11 a.m. ET on Thursday, June 22, 2017. Catch every moment of the match live on FOX Sports 1.

Odds Analysis

Both of the matches in Group B are going to be tough to handicap in the second match day. Cameroon figures to be the better of the two teams by a slight margin, but it's hard to say that either of these teams are truly capable of winning at the highest level in the world, especially with the way both looked in their initial offerings in the Confederations Cup.

The Indomitable Lions are +140 favorites, but that isn't a mark that is all that inspiring from the oddsmakers. The Aussies are just behind at +175.

The total of 2.5 features vig on the under of -155, and that might as well effectively lower the total to beat to just 2.

How They Got Here

Both of these teams had better results on the final scoreboard than what was probably warranted. The end result for both though, was nary a single point.

Cameroon will have an extra day off after having played on Sunday against Chile. "Play," of course, is a subjective word, as this was a match that was over in the first five minutes. Sure, the Chileans didn't ultimately score until there were just nine minutes left in regular time, but there were several opportunities for the match to get blown out of proportion far more than 2-0 would indicate.

Australia wasn't much better against Germany. The Germans had some awful goalkeeping at the back from Bernd Leno, who let in two really soft goals, but that was really all the Aussies had going for them. Credit to the Socceroos for putting a lot of pressure on the Germans as they tried to see the game out, but they were never good enough in the last third throughout the match, and that's why they were beaten 3-2.

There's just a boatload of inexperience on both of these sides right now in terms of the truly top flight of international soccer, and that's going to cause a problem. Whichever team is able to break the mold and ultimately find a way to play a more sound game in the center of the pitch will probably be the one that comes away with the better opportunity to snag three points.

Benjamin Moukandjo and Christian Bassogog were actually relatively bright against Chile for the limited amount of times they had their feet on the ball in threatening areas. The Australians were a mess at the back against Germany, and though this is a much lesser challenge for sure, the principals of organization don't change any.

Cameroon has had the greater experience at this level, and that will show and ultimately lead it to three points that will keep it in this tournament while simultaneously sending the Socceroos packing.
