Mexico continues to struggle heading into friendly tune-up with Argentina

Argentina-vs-Mexico-Sept7

There isn't all that much time left for Mexico. El Tri has to get ready for a Confederations Cup Playoff against the United States on October 10. Their last shot to get it right prior to that match comes in a tough friendly played on American soil against Argentina.

ODDS ANALYSIS

Not surprisingly, Argentina is the comfortable favorite in this game at -1 on the Asian handicap and -200 on the moneyline. South American teams are always considered favorites over the North American sides, and this isn't much of an exception, especially knowing that the Argentines are coming off of a seven-goal outburst against Bolivia.

Argentina's side is going to come into this match with an eye on winning for sure, as the team has brought its best side possible, including Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero for this duel.

The total is somewhat high at 2.5 and -130 vig on the over, but that shouldn't be a shock considering the fact that the Mexicans just played to a six-goal draw against Trinidad & Tobago the same day Argentina hung seven on Bolivia.

NOTABLE PLAYERS

We've already mentioned that both Messi and Aguero are here for Argentina, but it is interesting to note who isn't here for Mexico just as much.

In Ricardo Ferretti's first game in charge of the Mexican national team, he left Jonathan Dos Santos, Guillermo Ochoa and Giovani Dos Santos off of the squad list, and there has been no move made to bring these players back. Clearly, Ferretti wants a totally different side, one which is more focused on ball possession than just attacking with full force than what Miguel Herrera used at the Gold Cup.

QUOTE TO NOTE

"He asked for discipline and order and that we take these games very seriously because although they are preparation, they are very important because they allow us to go well into the game against the United States." – Mexico defender Moises Munoz on what Ferretti asked of his team headed into these couple friendlies leading into the Confederations Cup

RECENT FORM

Technically speaking, Mexico hasn't had a loss since losing in Copa America to Ecuador nine matches ago. That being said, the team has been awful defensively, allowing nine goals in its last five matches overall, and it has just one win in 90 minutes in its last six, that coming in the Gold Cup final against a Jamaica side which essentially won its Super Bowl against the United States in the semifinals of that tournament.

Argentina has not tasted defeat yet in this calendar year, going 7-3-0 in 10 fixtures. The team crushed Bolivia 7-0 as we stated before, and that marked the third time it beat a very good South American team by at least five goals already this season.

ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION

There are just too many changes right now for Mexico to trust this squad. Ferretti debuted an odd 4-1-4-1 formation against Trinidad & Tobago, and that clearly didn't accomplish its goals with the extra men in the midfield in terms of possession. T&T had far too many excellent looks at goal, and it was deserving of the three it netted.

This game could be far worse from Mexico's standpoint.

It'll feel like a home game in Arlington, but we aren't sure that it makes much of a difference from Mexico's standpoint. Ferretti is just trying to piece together the right combination of 11 men to go against the United States at the Rose Bowl in a short five weeks. Experimenting against a well-oiled Argentinian machine isn't going to end well.
