Strawweight star Felice Herrig will look to bounce back from a high profile loss to Paige VanZant this Saturday in a matchup against Kailin Curran. It’s an important fight for both women, as it only takes a few wins to rise into the top 10 in a thin division. ODDS ANALYSIS
Herrig is understandably the favorite, as she’s far more experienced than Curran. However, “Lil’ Bulldog” has never been a dominant strawweight, so it wouldn’t make sense for oddsmakers to give her too expensive of a money line. The over/under is set at 2.5 rounds, which makes sense given that neither woman is a known finisher.
FIGHT PREVIEW
Felice is an experienced, well-rounded fighter that is comfortable in almost every phase. Her preference is to strike, and she is a solid standup artist with respectable Muay Thai background. Herrig operates with a crisp jab and front kick, which sets up fluid punch-kick combinations. She’s nowhere near as crisp as champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk, but nobody in the division is.
The best part of her game is the clinch, where she uses her strength to control opponents against the fence. From there, she’ll throw hard knees and elbows leading into inside and outside trips. When she’s on the ground, Herrig has a solid understanding of positions and can threaten with submissions.
The problem with Herrig is she’s not a very good athlete, so there is a noticeable lack of explosiveness in her strikes or her takedown attempts.
Curran is a balanced fighter as well, although she very much prefers to wrestle than strike. She has a takedown accuracy of 80 percent, and she’s very aggressive when it comes to takedowns.
At just 25 years old, Curran is improving quickly, though her standup could use work. Her striking accuracy is a decent 45.1 perecent, but her output is paltry at just around three strikes a minute. Like Herrig, Curran isn’t a great athlete, but has good enough cardio to impose a high pace for three rounds.
BREAKDOWN AND PREDICTION
While Curran can be overwhelmed by aggressive fighters like VanZant, Herrig doesn’t have the type of pressure style that typically gives her problems. Herrig will have a slight advantage on the feet, but the edge goes to Curran’s aggressive wrestling. PVZ exposed Herrig’s wrestling and cardio in her last matchup, and Curran has a similar style.
