Spinaway Stakes betting odds on Saturday

8-SpinawayStakes-Sept4

Some of the top fillies of tomorrow are going to get together for their first major test in a Grade 1 race against each other on Saturday at the Spinaway Stakes.

ODDS ANALYSIS

1: Tap to It 7/2

2: Rachel's Valentina 5/2

3: Tonasah 7/2

4: Anna Rae 12/1

5: Constellation 3/1

6: Banree 8/1

It's a small field, so we know that the odds aren't going to be the greatest in this race. But go ahead and look at those names running in the inside posts. Look familiar?

Tap to It was sired by the great Tapit, while Rachel's Valentina's dam is the elite mare, Rachel Alexandra. Just based on those names alone being on direct breeding lines is why they’re the two favorites, though both also showed themselves well in their maiden offerings, too.

Beyond the two name fillies here, Constellation and Tonasah are the middling choices, while the field rounds out with Banree and Anna Rae, who would be somewhat stunning upset choices.

FAVORITE TO FOLLOW

Any filly out of Rachel Alexandra has to be taken seriously, but Rachel's Valentina is already so much more than just a name. She breezed six furlongs in her first race here at Saratoga at the outset of August, running an 87 Beyer Speed Rating to romp to the two-length victory.

Rachel's Valentina has already had some really strong fractions at workouts, including going four furlongs last week in just 48 and 3, which is a blazing time for a filly in her two-year old year.

UNDERDOG TO WATCH

What does Anna Rae really have going for her? We're not all that sure. She came out of the blocks slowly in her 5 1/2 furlong opener four weeks ago on this track, but when the dust settled, Luis Saez rode her out to an 11-length victory over a nine-filly field.

You'll see an 81 Beyer Speed Rating and not be impressed with Anna Rae, nor will you be impressed with her recent workout of four furlongs in just 50 seconds flat, but one has to remember that she was well bet as a 9 to 2 longshot in her opening race for a reason.

Betting on Anna Rae is really more about the price than anything else here in the Spinaway Stakes.

ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION

Odds have it, you'll never hear of most of these fillies again after this race.

The winner is going to likely head to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies race and will be amongst the favorites to win the Kentucky Oaks next year, but there's a long way to go for whomever turns out to be victorious.

Most successful two-year olds don't turn into great racers in their careers. That's just the way that it is with horse racing.

That said, Anna Rae is going to be our pick to win the Spinaway Stakes.

Not just because she has the longest price on the board, but because she had the most impressive showing in her opening maiden race of the other fillies in this field. She'll start from off the pace, but with a relatively slow field, even running a Beyer Speed Rating in the mid-80s might be good enough to win on Saturday.
