Jim Dandy Stakes betting odds on Saturday

horse-racing_7.ar

Many of the three-year old colts who competed in the Triple Crown are now back on the course for their runs towards the Breeders' Cup.

Coming up on Saturday is the Jim Dandy Stakes, one of the top races for three-year olds in the summer.

ODDS ANALYSIS

The field hasn't quite been set yet at the Jim Dandy Stakes, but there's a legit chance there are only four horses in this field come Saturday. The problem with this race is that the Haskell Invitational is being run on Sunday, and the higher purse and Grade 1 status makes that a much more appealing race for owners and trainers.

Frosted has been confirmed for this field and should end up being the favorite. He hasn't raced since the Belmont Stakes in June, but has been training well and has built a nice rapport with jockey Joel Rosario.

Competitive Edge and Texas Red will surely be amongst the favorites as well, while Frammento and Japan will be amongst the longer shots on the board.

Competitive Edge has also been entered in the Haskell though, and it is possible that he gives it a go against American Pharoah on Sunday instead of racing against this lesser field on Saturday.

Other potential entrants include Upstart and Tekton, though both horses are also entered in Sunday's Haskell.

FAVORITE TO FOLLOW

Frosted hasn't done a heck of a lot wrong in his career. He has never finished worse than fourth in a race, and he has always posted above-average Beyer Speed Ratings.

His last four-furlong workout here at Saratoga was blazing at 47 and 4, and that should easily make him the favorite in this one.

Frosted is going to try to run from on the pace, and if this field ends up being small enough, he might set the pace as the leader. That would be a new position for him though, and our only concern is that he might not like running at the head of such a small field.

UNDERDOG TO WATCH

Texas Red was never ready to run in the Triple Crown races this year in spite of the fact that he was the two-year old champion at the Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

It was a little disappointing for Texas Red to lose his return to the track since February at the Dwyer Stakes, though a second place finish against a very good field wasn't the end of the world.

Whether Texas Red is capable of covering this distance is the only concern, though. He has never run at 1 1/8 miles in his career, though all signs point to the son of Afleet Alex being just fine when he is stretched out.

ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION

This is going to end up being a poor race to bet on, knowing that the field is going to be awfully small.

There are some dangerous ponies in this field as well, most notably front-running Japan, who will have a nice price on his head even if there are only four or five who end up running.

Still, the best colt in this field, even if all seven entrants do go to post, is Frosted. We suspect that he'll get his summer off to a good start and position himself well to be amongst the favorites in the Breeders' Cup.
