Horse Racing Odds - Starlet Stakes Race Preview

19-Starlet-Stakes

We're getting to that point in the year that two-year olds are starting to get geared up for their three-year old year. This Saturday, fillies will take to the track at Los Alamitos for a rare Grade 1 race in December, the Starlet Stakes, the winner of which will surely be one of the early favorites to win the Kentucky Oaks next year.

ODDS ANALYSIS

1: Treasuring
2: Street Fancy
3: Stays in Vegas
4: Pacific Heat
5: Patriotic Diamond
6: Surfside Tiara
7: Mama's Sugar
8: Sutton's Smile
9: Pretty N Cool

Just nine will take to the track at the Starlet Stakes, and there are certainly some great fillies in this field. Three of the nine have already run in a Grade 1 race in their careers, while five of the nine have raced in at least one graded stakes race, something that you don't see this early in the careers of young fillies all that often.

There are still no morning lines posted for the Starlet Stakes as of Thursday morning, though it's certainly notable that Pacific Heat and Pretty N Cool are the likely choices as the favorite, albeit not as an odds on selections.

FAVORITE TO FOLLOW

We say this all the time in horse racing: It isn't often that the oddsmakers are brutally wrong about a horse. Pretty N Cool was the 2 to 1 favorite at the Del Mar Debutante, and she finished second best that day. Sure, she put together a clunker at the Desi Arnaz Stakes, but just the fact that Bob Baffert is training her is enough to have our eyes fixated on Pretty N Cool.

Let's not forget that win in the Matron Stakes back in October at Belmont Park. It was a rare trip across the country to the East Coast for Pretty N Cool, but she took well to it and was a deserving wire-to-wire winner.

UNDERDOG TO WATCH

Jim Rome is going to be represented in this race with Stays in Vegas. She'll break from the third post and could be in for a great run. Sure, Stays in Vegas was bested in the Del Mar Debutante by a healthy 12 lengths, but aside from that, she's an unbeaten filly.

Stays in Vegas had had some really sharp workouts of late, most recently a four-furlong blaze over 46 seconds, a mark that no other filly in this field is matching.

ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION

This is still a day all about Pretty N Cool. She could get some run from her stable-mate Treasuring, who interestingly enough has the more popular jockey on her back in Victor Espinoza, but we still don't see that being enough to overcome what should be the favorite.

Stays in Vegas and Street Fancy will certainly have some push at the end of this race and could hit the board, while Pacific Heat is sure to be a tough competitor with her two excellent races under her belt, but the Starlet Stakes screams of a wire-to-wire victory for Pretty N Cool to make her a top choice for the Kentucky Oaks.
