2020 Grade 1 Oaklawn Stakes – Saturday – Top Entries

The Oaklawn Stakes is a Grade 1 race that is a mile and an eighth in length. The race is limited to three-year-old contenders for the Kentucky Derby.

Opening at 6/1 is Basin. Trained by Steven M Asmussen with jockey Florent Geroux, Basin has 4 career starts with two wins, one second, one third, and total earnings of $361,000. Basin made his fame with a win in the Grade 1 Hopeful last September. In his last start he finished third at the Grade 2 Rebel Stakes on March 14.

Thousand Words is a 3/1 choice for the Oaklawn Stakes and is trained by Bob Baffert with Joe Talamo getting the mount. Thousand Words has four career starts with three wins and total earnings of $235,000. Thousand Words won his first three starts including in the Grade 2 Los Alamitos Futurity and the Grade 3 Robert B Lewis. However, in his last start on March 7 at the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes he finished fourth and out of the money. Any horse trained by the Hall of Famer Baffert is likely to command a premium price and be an overlay.

Farmington Road is a 6/1 choice that has four career starts with a win and a second-place finish with total earnings of $45,000. Todd Pletcher is the trainer, which has inflated the price, while Martin Garcia will get the mount. The Pletcher connection much more than the track record has made Farmington Road as one of the chalks.

Taishan and Digital opened as 8/1 picks. Taishan has five career starts with two wins and $113,720 in earnings. The trainer is Richard Baltas with Joel Rosario as jockey. Digital has four starts with two wins and a second-place finish as well as $84,000 in earnings. The trainer is W Bret Calhoun with jockey Brian Joseph Hernandez Jr. Taishan failed to finish in the money in his last two starts at the Grade 3 Sham and Grade 3 Southwest Stakes. Digital is coming off a fifth-place finish at the Grade 2 Risen Star, which was his only graded race.
