Horse Racing Odds - Holy Bull Stakes Race Preview

3.ar

The route to the Kentucky Derby is officially on at Gulfstream Park for the first time in 2016. The field at the Holy Bull Stakes isn't one chock full of competitors, but there are three major ponies in this field, all of which could end up being factors in the Run for the Roses come May.

ODDS ANALYSIS

1: Perfect Saint

2: Mohaymen

3: Fellowship

4: Conquest Big E

5: Greenpointcrusader

6: Frontier Ranger

The Holy Bull presents a case of the haves and the have nots for sure. Mohaymen, Conquest Big E and Greenpointcrusader are all expected to hit the board, while Perfect Saint, Fellowship and Frontier Ranger are merely expected to just be filling out this field.

Mohaymen, the winner of the Remsen Stakes and the Nashua Stakes, comes to Florida for the first time in his career and will likely be the odds on favorite of the bunch, though if that turns out to be the case, there will be lots of betting on the other two favorites as well.

FAVORITE TO FOLLOW

Mohaymen is actually the betting favorite to win the Kentucky Derby right at this moment. His showings in his maiden race along with the Remsen and Nashua were awfully impressive, as he was able to put himself into a great stalking position early on and turn on the jets at the end.

In a sense, he's a little like American Pharoah last year, a big colt with long strides who never seems to tire out. We would've loved to see Mohaymen at the Breeders' Cup last year, but his route through Aqueduct was certainly adequate instead.

UNDERDOG TO WATCH

Conquest Big E isn't going to be a massive underdog in this matchup, but trainer Mark Casse knows that he has a shot to sweep the races here in Florida with this pony. He didn't get a great run at the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, but aside from that, he's largely been flawless against relatively small fields.

The problem Conquest Big E is going to run into is that he wants to run the exact same race as his top competition, Mohaymen. Both are going to be stalkers and try to turn on the jets in the final couple furlongs, and the plan will only work for one of the two of them.

ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION

Greenpointcrusader is certainly worth a look as well, knowing that he's going to end up coming from well off the pace to try to win this one as opposed to stalking. If the other two favorites end up knocking each other off by running the other ragged, it's entirely possible that Greenpointcrusader could swoop in for a victory.

That said, we still think Mohaymen is the best horse in this field, and we think he's going to enjoy a relatively easy run from Florida to get into the Kentucky Derby, likely as one of the top three or four choices on the board. He'll have to get a good run in front of him on Saturday to put off this short field, but we don't think he'll have any issues claiming these 10 Kentucky Derby points at the Holy Bull.
