LIV Golf Tulsa Matchups Odds

The sixth of 14 tournaments this year has LIV in Oklahoma this week for LIV Golf Tulsa, contested at Cedar Ridge Country Club in Broken Arrow. Returning to the states after a pair of events overseas, the field will attempt to slow down scorching hot Talor Gooch, who became the first to win consecutive tournaments while joining Brooks Koepka as the only two-time LIV winners. The pair rest atop the outright odds board and are two of 12 players scheduled to peg it up in New York for next week’s second major. LIV golfers had a nice run at Augusta last month with Koepka, Phil Mickelson and Patrick Reed all placing among the top 5 and the dozen or so players will look to fine tune their games for the PGA Championship. Need to Know

Like many tournaments in the brief history of LIV Golf, players are getting their first look at the host venue. One of the most exclusive spots in the state, Cedar Ridge Country Club has been consistently ranked among the best five courses in Oklahoma by Golf Digest. The sprawling 7,213 yards par 70 layout offers wide open approaches after a major redesign in 2016 eliminated a number of trees and removed some sand traps. Still, the course is no picnic with dogleg action on a number of holes. In preparation for LIV’s arrival the course reversed the nines with the 10th hole playing as the 18th. Cedar Ridge has hosted numerous collegiate tournaments and the 1983 Women’s US Open, but this will be the biggest men’s event to take place on the property. Several players, including Gooch, Abraham Ancer and Charles Howell played collegiately in Oklahoma and I’m sure they’ll be looking forward to a homecoming.

LIV Golf Tulsa Matchup Picks

Phil Mickelson +104 vs. Thomas Pieters

After some disappointing finishes at the start of the year Mickelson has picked up his game recently showing he still has something left in the tank. He’s yet to crack the top 10 in a LIV event but his runner-up showing at the Masters seemed to give him a spark. He followed that effort with his two best finishes going 16th in Australia and 15th in Singapore. Lefty doesn’t have to worry about winning the cash prize first place brings, but he’s ultra competitive and that means a lot when the game is in a good place.

Dustin Johnson -115 vs. Cameron Smith

It’s been an uneventful season so far for both players, among the biggest names in the LIV Golf League. I do expect things to pick up for them ahead of the PGA Championship with DJ needing a big boost of confidence with no finishes inside the top 5. It looked like Johnson was turning a corner with a pair of top 10s before stumbling to 25th in Singapore. We’ve seen DJ in the past respond with some strong efforts just when it looked like the struggles were overwhelming.

Patrick Reed -115 vs. Joaquin Niemann

Reed is near the top of the outright odds board based on solid play over the last few months and that’s about to translate to big things on the course. He earned top 5s in Orlando and Adelaide before a poor middle round left him 14th in Singapore. That was about the only misstep in his game, which included a top 5 at Augusta last month. His short game will play well at Cedar Ridge giving him an edge in this matchup.

Peter Uihlein -101 vs. Sergio Garcia

When finishing 11th is your worst outing of the season things are going fairly well. Uihlein has been a model of consistency racking up four top 10s, including a runner-up in the season opener in Mayakoba. The chances of him winning a tournament are greater than losing a matchup, which is why I’m backing him in this head to head. And I’ll admit I was surprised to see him as a dog with a value price in this matchup.

Martin Kaymer +125 vs. Graeme McDowell

In a field of 48 golfers it’s often tough to find value picks at plus odds. And when they are listed there’s always a good reason for it. I look at Kaymer and see what can be. The former world No. 1 and two-time major champion missed the first three tournaments returning in Adelaide to finish 46th at 7-over. He wasn’t much better in Singapore placing 44th, but the game improved and those rounds will only help him this week, which is why I’m backing Kaymer at his price.
