There is no rest for European Tour players, as one week after the Race to Dubai Championship was decided, the new season begins. The first event for the 2018 season is the UBS Hong Kong Open and some big names have chosen to stay in action this week. Justin Rose is listed as the +450 favorite, while Sergio Garcia is the second choice at odds of +650. Matthew Fitzpatrick is the third choice in the betting at +1050, while last season’s Race to Dubai winner, Tommy Fleetwood is the fourth choice at +1350.

Odds Analysis

Justin Rose +450

You have to wonder if Rose can put last week behind him quickly enough to win in Hong Kong. Rose had a great chance to win the European Tour Championship and then he just played poorly on the final nine holes. He did win this event two years ago and he is in good form, so perhaps he can put last week behind him, but I think he is overvalued at these odds.

Sergio Garcia +650

This will be the first time Sergio is playing this event but first-timers have done well in this event in the past and the layout should suit him with tight fairways and Bermuda greens. I think you can make a case for Garcia being favored this week.

Matthew Fitzpatrick +1050

This is a great course for Fitzpatrick, as he hits it straight and putts well. He did tie for third in this event two years ago. I think Fitzpatrick will be right in the mix this week for the win and he has some value at these odds.

Tommy Fleetwood +1350

I don’t like the chances of Fleetwood this week. How can he not have a letdown after winning the Race to Dubai? He has also been playing every week and I think fatigue will be an issue. I think he is a go-against this week.

Rafa Cabrera Bello +2050

He finished second in this event last year and he is normally good in greens-in-regulation so if his putter his hot he could win this event. The concern with taking him is that before last year’s 2nd place finish he had a missed cut, a tie for 16th and a tie for 60th in this tournament.

Marcus Fraser +7050

Fraser is the first of my two big longshots this week. He loves playing tree-lined courses, so he should do well this week. He tied for third in this event in 2012 and he had a chance to win in 2014 before falling to a tie for 5th.

Matteo Manassero +9050

Why not Manassero has a huge longshot this week? He hasn’t played this event since 2012 but in 2010 he tied for 2nd and he tied for 4th in 2012.

Course: This event takes place at the Hong Kong Golf Club. It was founded in 1889 as the Royal Hong Kong Golf Club. The course is a par 70 that measures 6,703 yards. It is a short course with narrow fairways and a lot of trees. The greens are Bermuda grass. The winning scores the past five years were -15, -12, -14, -17 and -13. Hitting greens is critical and limiting mistakes is the key to winning. Justin Rose made just three bogeys when he won this event two years ago.

One interesting fact to keep in mind about the UBS Hong Kong Open is that in the previous 57 editions, there have been 47 different winners.
