The European Tour stays in South Africa for the second consecutive week and fourth time this year at the Tshwane Open. As is the case this time of year, the field is lacking any star power at the top and little depth at the bottom. The highest ranked player in the field is Hao Tong Li +2200 and he’s ranked No. 135.

Other players to keep your eye on include Thomas Aiken +1750, George Coetzee +1000, Jaco Van Zyl +1400, Dean Burmester +1150, American Peter Uihlein +2000 and rookies Thomas Detry +3999 and Jordan Smith +2500.

This is the fifth year of the tournament and South African players have won three of the four events with Ross Fisher being the only foreigner to capture the crown.

The Course: Pretoria Country Club, Waterkloof, South Africa

The track is one of the shorter ones on the European Tour only measuring 6,830 yards but it’s not a pushover. Last year Charl Schwartzel was the only player to reach double digits. The parkland course is over 100 years old and has been used many times on the local Sunshine Tour, so most of the players are familiar with the layout. Gary Player was brought in to redesign the course in 2004. The track is tight in spots and features small, undulating greens that puts pressure on approach shots.

ODDS ANALYSIS

I like a trio of rookies this week. Thomas Detry +3999, Jordan Smith +2500 and Romain Langasque +2800. Sooner rather than later one of these three is going to pick up their first win and I have an inkling that it’s going to come this week.

Langasque +2800 is now a perfect 5-for-5 on the European Tour this season and flourished again in Joburg last week, shooting 65-71-68 in the rain-shortened 54-hole event to take T11. That was just one spot above his season-best T10 at the opening Aussie PGA Championship. The young Frenchman was ninth for GIR in Joburg and should enjoy this week’s stern test where only three players have finished double digits under par the last two years.

Detry +3999 is still getting his feet wet, but making cuts and making progress after a stellar college career at Illinois. His best finish on the European Tour was a third place at the Alfred Dunhill Championship, which by the way, was also played in South Africa. It’s the Belgians first trip to the Tshwane Open and he is a nice sneaky, sleeper pick this week.

Smith +2500 is leading the rookie of the year race in the early going and should be ready and rested to play well this week. He’s been in the money in seven of eight starts this year, that includes a solo third at the South African Open and a T6 in the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters. He’s currently 28th in Stroke Average at 69.86.

FADE: I always like to FADE the previous week’s winner, so this week I recommend going against Darren Fichardt +1150. His last two starts at Tshwane have been poor as well with a missed cut and a T49.
