Louis Oosthuizen leads the field for the Joburg Open, the last event for the European Tour until January. South Africans have dominated their home tournament through the years, winning eight of the 11 events. Oosthuizen is listed as the favorite with odds of +535, while Dylan Frittelli is the second choice at odds of +850. Joburg Open Matchup Picks

Before we get to the picks there are a few things to consider. This year the tournament will be held at Randpark Golf Club and not Royal Johannesburg & Kensington GC. The players will play the Firethorn and Bushwillow courses with Firethorn getting the bulk of the action. It is a 7,595 yard, par 72 course, but since it is located 6,000 feet above sea level, elevation is a factor and the ball will fly farther. Big hitters should thrive this week, so distance off the tee is our key statistic to consider for the matchups.

Louis Oosthuizen -150 vs. Dylan Frittelli

This play is more about going against Frittelli than it is a play on Oosthuizen. It is just hard to play great in back-to-back weeks and Frittelli is coming off a win at the Mauritius Open. This will be just the 20th start for Oosthuizen this year. He is the highest ranked player in the field and he has been excellent in South Africa in his career with four wins.

Haydn Porteous -115 vs. Darren Fichardt

Porteous won the 2016 Joburg Open and the course for this year’s event should suit him well, as he was fifth in driving distance on the European Tour last season. On the other side of this matchup is Fichardt, who is just 143rd in driving distance. I will take Porteous in this matchup.

Dean Burmester -115 vs. Darren Fichardt

Another key stat matchup for the week has Burmester with a big edge against Fichardt. Burmester was 8th on the European Tour in driving distance last season, while Fichardt was just 143rd. I will take Burmester in this matchup.

Matt Wallace +110 vs. Paul Peterson

Wallace was 73rd on the European Tour in driving distance last season, while Peterson was just 150th. I will take Wallace at plus money in this matchup.

Romain Langasque -115 vs. Ashun Wu

It is really all about driving distance with the matchups this week and this is one of the best ones. Langasque was 19th on the European Tour in driving distance last season, while Wu ranked just 173rd. It is hard to see how Wu can be competitive on this course when he gets outdriven by 20 or 30 yards on most holes. I will take Langasque in this matchup.
