The European Tour makes it’s three straight years playing in the country of India at this week’s Hero Indian Open. The tournament enters its 53rd year but just it’s third on the official European Tour schedule.

With the Masters in sight, the majority of the top European Tour players are taking time off or playing abroad in the States. Rafa Cabrera-Bello +1000 makes his first visit to the Hero Indian Open and headlines this year’s lackluster field.

Defending champion S.S.P. Chawrasia +7000, Anirban Lahiri +800, Kiradech Aphibarnrat +2500, Peter Uihlein +1500 and George Coetzee +1400 are all scheduled to compete.

Young guns Paul Dunne +3999, Jordan Smith +2750 and Romain Langasque +3000 also could be in the mix this week. Dunne is coming off an impressive finish at the Tshwane Open where he tied for 11th. Smith and Langasque are two of the more impressive rookies on the European Tour so far this year.

The Course: This year’s event has a new venue and will become the first men’s international event to be played at the Gary Player course at the DLF Golf and Country Club. The tournament has been played only before at the DLF, but at the Arnold Palmer course, back in 2009, when C Muniyappa won the title. The layout is much more challenging and measures over 7,600 yards. Long hitters and those who hit greens in regulation will have a huge advantage this week.

ODDS ANALYSIS

Peter Uihlein +1500 is no stranger to Indian soil and is 4-for-4 in European - Challenge Tour events in his career. That includes T31 in last year’s Indian Open and a pair of top 20’s in the Gujarat Kensville Challenge in 2012 and 2013. He’s quietly up to 24th on this season’s Race to Dubai after three top seven finishes in his last six starts and is coming off a solo fourth in last week’s Tshwane Open where he shot 66-65 on the weekend. Uihlein keeps the mojo flowing with another top five finish, if not better.

Rookie Jordan Smith +2750 has cashed seven straight weeks and currently sits 20th in the Race to Dubai standings. The kid is consistent and really doesn’t have a weakness in his game. He hits it long and putts well and is going to win an event sooner rather than later. This could be the week!

FADE: Kiradech Aphibarnrat +2500 is a hit or miss candidate every time he tees it up. The Thai star either finishes in the top 15 or heads to the airport after Friday’s round with a missed cut. He has had success playing in India, but his recent form is a real concern, two missed cuts in his last two starts.
