European Tour Picks – Volvo China Open Matchup Odds and Picks

Volvo China Open

The 25th playing of the Volvo China Open takes place on a new track when the European Tour tees it up at Genzon Golf Club in Shenzhen from May 2-5. The layout isn’t entirely new to the Tour as it played host to the 2014 edition and the Shenzhen International from 2015-2017. The field includes a number of China’s best golfers with several matched up against each other on the matchup odds list. Haotong Li opened as the betting favorite, but with long odds, the oddsmakers are saying the field is fairly even and wide open. Here is a closer look at some of the matchups for this week’s event.

Need to Know

There isn’t a lot to look at as far as course form since only four tournaments have been played at Genzon. Alexander Levy won the 2014 China Open here and Bernd Wiesberger was victorious in 2017 at the Shenzhen International, both are among the field this week. A fairly recent course that opened in 1995, Genzon is mostly tree-lined that stretches to just under 7,150 yards with generous fairways. However, it isn’t as easy as one would assume. Pin placements are tricky and water comes into play on a number of holes. The par-5s are scoreable and performance on those holes will have plenty to do with the outcome. We can also expect precipitation this week, which will give distance hitters an increased advantage on the softened track.

Volvo China Open Matchup Picks

Haotong Li -135 vs. Jorge Campillo

A look at recent results says Campillo is the right pick in this matchup. He won for the first time on the Euro Tour last week in Morocco and current form is outstanding with a pair of runner-ups, a solo third and a T20 to go along with his title. Unlike Campillo, Li didn’t play in Morocco last week and the long haul after a victory has to be draining. Li’s been a mixed bag here with a runner-up in 2015 followed by two MCs. He did win at Topwin in 2017 and recent form has been strong giving him the edge.

Bernd Wiesberger +115 vs. Mikko Korhonen

We’ve been waiting for months for the Austrian to find his game and a T23 at the Hero Indian Open his last time out was encouraging. Wiesberger was on the fast track a few years ago, rising in the OWGR and playing solidly before injury derailed him for most of 2018. The road back has been treacherous with four MCs in five starts, but Wiesberger won at Genzon in 2017 and a return could be the spark.

Alexander Levy -110 vs. Ross Fisher

Levy missed the cut last week in Morocco but it’s too early to pass on him, especially considering his record at Genzon. “This golf course really suits my game. It’s open from the tee and has soft greens, so it’s more like target golf, which for me is how I like to play golf.” He’s played all four events on the track and won here in 2014. He also has two other top-10s and hasn’t finished outside the top-25.

David Lipsky -140 vs. Kurt Kitayama

The price is steep, but there’s a lot to like about the way Lipsky is playing. The American has put together a solid season on the Euro Tour and he has a pair of victories on the Asian Tour, so this shouldn’t be a stretch for him. Plus, his last stop at Genzon produced a T5 in 2017. Lipsky had a top-5 last week in Morocco and has bounced back from two MCs to continue his surge into the top-10 in the Race to Dubai.
