Rory McIlroy leads the field for the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship that is played at the Old Course St. Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns. There are just four events remaining until the Race to Dubai Final Series. Unlike last week’s British Masters, where the weather was favorable, conditions in Scotland should be more challenging, with wind and rain in the forecast. The winning streak ended last week, as we went 1-3 in the British Masters. Let’s look at the matchups and picks for this week’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

Alfred Dunhill Links Championship Matchup Picks

Before we get to the picks there are a few things to consider. The weather is expected to be a major factor in this event with rain and wind in the forecast. Some players thrive in bad conditions, while others struggle, so we’ll focus on players who like the bad weather and we’ll also look at scrambling as the big statistic this week, as getting out of trouble is going to be a big key to winning this event.

Tommy Fleetwood -159 vs. Branden Grace

I like Fleetwood to be on contention for the win this week. He has had three weeks to get ready for this event and he loves playing on the links courses in Scotland. He has played well in this event with a tie for 5th, a 5th and a tie for second. It doesn’t hurt that this matchup is against Grace who had to travel overseas after playing in last week’s Presidents Cup.

Tommy Fleetwood -142 vs. Matthew Fitzpatrick

I am definitely taking a position on Fleetwood this week and this is his other matchup. I like Fitzpatrick as a player but I don’t like him nearly as much in the wind and on links courses. He has never made the cut in three tries in this event. I will lay the price and take Fleetwood.

Lee Westwood +100 vs. Paul Dunne

We know that Westwood is a player who loves playing in bad weather and it is very tough to play great two weeks in a row and that is what Dunne will be trying to do. This is a play on Westwood and at the same time it is also a play against Dunne.

Ross Fisher -167 vs. Lucas Bjerregaard

This is one of the scrambling statistic matchups for the week. Fisher is 84th on the European Tour in scrambling and that is nothing special, but Bjerregaard is awful at 195th on the European Tour. It helps our cause that Fisher has four top 25 finishes in this event including two second place finishes. I will lay the price and take Fisher in this matchup.

Padraig Harrington -119 vs. Kiradech Aphibarnrat

The other strong scrambling statistic matchup I am going with this week has Harrington against Aphibarnrat. Harrington is 19th on the European Tour in scrambling, while Aphibarnrat ranks really poorly at 158th. It doesn’t hurt the cause that Harrington has a lot of links experience.
