League of Legends World Championships SK Telecom T1 vs. Misfits Betting Preview

eSports-Coverage_preview-bm

The biggest mismatch of the Quarterfinals will take place early Friday morning in China when the reigning champions take on a team that few believed would get to the knockout stage. SK Telecom T1 is the most decorated team in League of Legends history. The Korean superstars have won three of the last four World Championships and were the favorites to win it all coming into this year’s event. They are still the favorite according to the oddsmakers and are expected to cruise here.

Misfits are heavy underdogs. This is the first time the European squad made it to Worlds and they raised eyebrows when they outperformed North America’s best team in Team SoloMid and Taiwan’s best team in Flash Wolves. They don’t have near the talent that SKT does, but do have one superstar on the team.

How They Got Here

SKT dominated Group A, going 5-1 and sweeping Edward Gaming and Cloud9. Surprisingly enough, the only team that they lost to was Taiwanese side ahq. For whatever reason, SKT has hiccups against Taiwanese teams so this wasn’t unexpected.

Misfits went 3-3 in Group Stage, getting beat by World Elite twice. They were able to split with TSM and that meant a one-game tiebreaker with TSM to determine who would advance. Misfits emerged victorious there and sent North America into tears.

Player to Watch

If Misfits have any chance to pull off the upset, PowerOfEvil will have to have the performance of his life. There’s no denying that he is talented and he might just be the most talented mid laner in Europe.

There is a world of difference between the best mid laners in Europe and Faker though. Faker is the highest paid player in the world for a reason. He can single-handedly put SKT on his back and lead them to a victory with the team in a massive hole, and does things that no one else can.

Misfits play through PowerOfEvil and look to get him ahead in order to constantly apply pressure. He can play a number of champions, but is constantly looking to carry. Look for his teammates to try to get him ahead in this one and expect repeated gank attempts on Faker.

Matchup to Watch

Peanut has not been able to adapt to the current meta very well. He was seen as the best jungler in the world last year with his fantastic play as a member of ROX Tigers, and almost helped lead the team to victory over SKT.

However, he has not been good on the team fighting champions favored by this meta. His play on Gragas has been lackluster and helped to contribute to SKT’s lone loss in the Group Stage. After that performance, he was replaced by Blank, a player who isn’t as flashy, but is consistent at the very least.

Unfortunately, Maxlore is not a player that can take advantage of Peanut. He is a decent jungler at best and will have a tough matchup either way.

Prediction

You just can’t go against SKT in a situation like this. They habitually crush non-Korean teams in international competition and should lay waste to this Misfits side. The -1100 on the moneyline may be a little too much for bettors to cough up, so lay the 1.5 games in the best of five instead.
