League of Legends Update - Regional Championship Review

League of Legends Odds

Last weekend, four of the five major regions crowned their champions for Spring 2017. Favorites carried the day across the board with every top seed and betting favorite emerging victorious, but some performances were more dominant than others. Each one of the winners earned a coveted spot to the Mid-Season Invitational where they will square off with 12 other teams for at least a million-dollar prize pool in Brazil. Defending champions SK Telecom T1 will be a massive favorite to defend their title, but other regions play different styles that may throw SKT for a loop.

KOREA

The final incarnation of the Telecom War was more of the same as SKT routed KT Rolster to win another domestic crown. It was more of the same as the duo of kkOma and Faker showed that no matter who else is around them, they are the best combination of coach and player in the world. Faker’s off-meta picks of Fizz, Karma, and Lulu electrified the crowd and Pawn didn’t have an answer on traditional champions like Syndra and LeBlanc. Over the course of the three-game series, Faker had a 15/9/25 KDA compared to an abysmal 4/17/14 KDA from Pawn.

The MVP of the playoffs was Peanut and it was well-deserved. Many believed that Score would outplay Peanut in the Jungle, but Peanut reigned supreme on Lee Sin. In Spring, SKT was 11-0 when Peanut was able to play on Lee Sin and the champion will be a must ban for any team that takes them on at MSI.

EUROPE

G2 may have the most conservative style of play in the world, but you can’t fault them as it continues to work. G2 slowly and methodically crushed the Unicorns of Love 3-1 to win its third straight European title.

There are no weak links on G2 and they can win games in their region in a myriad of ways. In Game 1, it was a dominant performance from Expect on Gangplank that won the match followed by Trick and mithy choosing team friendly champions in Ivern and Lulu in Game 2. Perkz was the hero in the close out game, outdueling Exileh’s Talon on LeBlanc.

As well as they have done in Europe though, they have really struggled at the international level. G2 went a combined 3-13 at MSI and Worlds at 2016 and didn’t inspire much confidence with their performance in a watered-down Katowice.

NORTH AMERICA

This was the closest series by far, stretching out to all five games with a wild final game. Cloud9 had looked resigned to its fate after Team SoloMid racked up 39 kills to just 7 for Cloud9 in the first two games of the series in games that were over in 28 minutes and 22 minutes. In particular, Jensen looked completely flustered and was making uncharacteristically poor plays in trying to best Bjergsen in the mid lane.

However, Cloud9 came back thanks to some great performances from Contractz and Sneaky. The rookie jungler showed that the moment wasn’t too big for him and Sneaky outperformed his AD Carry WildTurtle in Games 3 and 4 to even the series.

That set the stage for a wild Game 5 where the two teams were pretty even most of the way. The strength of top laner Hauntzer and Bjergsen ended up leading TSM to the win in the finale with good performances on Camille and Syndra.

TAIWAN

The only surprise in Taiwan was that Flash Wolves dropped a game to ahq after finishing the regular season undefeated. Flash Wolves has long been a thorn in the side of SKT and the one team that SKT may fear a little bit after what happened at MSI and Worlds last season.

This Flash Wolves squad may be the best we have ever seen. After dominating Taiwan and the best teams in Europe at IEM Katowice, a top three finish seems very possible.
