Korea -3300 China +1200 Taiwan +5000

There are some reasons to be optimistic about China and Taiwan heading into this tournament.

The format of the tournament should help both China and Taiwan just a little bit. Rather than this being a team tournament where everyone plays everyone to determine which team is best, this is a tournament about regions and each team in the region must take to the lift at least twice.

That means rather than SK Telecom T1 just crushing the other teams into submission, other teams in Korea will have to succeed. While there are no real doubts about the competency of KT Rolster and Samsung Galaxy, seen as the second- and third-best teams in the world, there is plenty of reason to doubt MVP.

MVP had a surprisingly good Spring Split. They made the playoffs for the first time ever and even got a sweep of Afreeca Freecs before getting knocked out by KT Rolster. MVP was looking to build off of that and find some way to crack the top three in the Summer Split, but instead this team has collapsed.

MVP is currently in the relegation zone at 2-8 and has looked awful. The team gave newcomers Ever8 Winners their only win so far this split and have been unable to get anything going. ADD has been one of the worst top-laners in Korea this season with a 1.3 KDA through the first half of summer and mid-laner Ian has struggled against the better mid-laners. Max has been the star of the team, but a support player can only do so much.

Another reason to doubt Korea is because of how SKT has performed against some of the best teams in Asia in one-game series. Flash Wolves and Team WE both split best-of-ones with SKT in the Group Stage at the Mid-Season Invitational and devised strategies that SKT struggled to counter.

No one will forget what happened last year at Worlds either. Flash Wolves rolled over SKT in their first meeting with an Aurelion Sol pick that left SKT completely flustered. SKT banned out the champion for almost the entire rest of the tournament and found itself unable to deal with him. These teams will once again have surprising off-meta picks that will be designed to catch their opponents off guard.

Korea should be the favorite; the question is whether or not they should be this big of a favorite. If this was a longer tournament with series or if the better teams were guaranteed to play more games, that would be one thing. However, there is a lot of variance with how the tournament is set up and off-meta picks could rule the day. Taking a stab at China or Taiwan at these prices isn’t the worst idea.
