League of Legends - LCK Korea Summer Split Storylines

With the first of the two Telecom Wars this split now in the book, it’s time to survey the landscape of LCK Korea. SK Telecom T1’s win over KT Rolster showed that the three-time world champions are still the favorites, but their grip on the top spot might be slipping. SKT was outplayed by KT for the first 25 minutes in all three games, but rallied to win off of mistakes from KT and superior late-game team fighting. At the other end of the table, three teams are in danger of relegation with each having just one win five weeks into the season.

SKT Remains Top Of The Table

The SKT win over KT was expected, but not in the manner in which it was achieved. SKT didn’t register more kills than KT in any game and ended with gold deficits in two of the three games. However, the consistent trio of Faker, Bang, and Wolf were able to pull this team to a victory.

In the first game of the series, SKT rolled out its Spring Split lineup with Huni in the top lane and Peanut as the jungler. However, they quickly switched tack after both had some struggles against KT.

Fortunately, SKT had been playing Untara in the top lane and had given long-time member Blank more time in the run-up. Untara was pivotal for SKT in the third game of the series, continuously split pushing with Fiora and forcing down turrets on her own. The play of Blank was solid too as SKT has now won 19 straight with him in the lineup.

Will KT Ever Knock Off SKT?

This is the fourth series that KT has lost to SKT this year and they have to be tired of the feeling that they fell just short once again. KT let that frustration get to them late in Game 3, when they squandered a lead after a poor team fight and then lost their minds. Rather than focus on Baron, all five members turned to take on a split pushing Untara and relinquished the buff in their dogged pace. It was a terrible move, but showed their frustrations.

There’s no denying that KT has the talent to beat SKT, it’s all about the mindset. They are continually outplaying their rivals on an individual basis, but let one or two mistakes rattle them in the mid- or late-game and blow it from that. If they can fix their mental game, they can usurp SKT.

Is Longzhu For Real?

Longzhu has been heralded as the next great Korean team since last season, but might finally be living up to the billing this split. They are 6-2 with a win over Samsung halfway through the split and the bottom lane of Pray and Gorilla might be the best in Korea.

The emergence of BDD in the mid-lane has made this team a contender. He has an 11.4 KDA this season, the highest in LCK, and has been unstoppable on Galio and Taliyah. If he can keep improving, Longzhu has a shot to crack the top three.

What Has Happened To MVP?

No team has fallen as far as MVP. A promising fourth-place finish in Spring Split left this team hopeful of a possible spot at Worlds, but they have been awful this summer. They are sitting at just 1-7 and have been less than inspiring in their play. They need to find the answer fast or they will be looking at relegation.
