League of Legends - Assessing LCK Korea before the final week

eSports-Coverage-bm-07-28-bm

Heading into the last week of the LCK Summer Split, there are three teams with a chance to win the regular season and earn the automatic bid into the Summer Split final. Two of the three are names you’d expect. Samsung Galaxy and KT Rolster have both looked fantastic this split with Samsung sitting at 12-4 and Rolster at 12-3. The team leading the pack isn’t the team you think it would be though. Longzhu Gaming are 13-3 and top of the table with two games to play on the docket. SK Telecom T1 couldn’t win a match on Patch 7.13 and ended up losing four matches to fall from first to fourth in the span of two weeks. Longzhu took full advantage and came out of nowhere to seize control, but holding onto it is another story.

The Rise of BDD

Longzhu has finally started to live up to its potential and mid-laner BDD is a big reason why. BDD has a chance to finish the split with a KDA over 10 and has come into his own.

It doesn’t matter what champion he is on, he is going to come up with a way to beat you. He has tended to pick more team-oriented champions during the team’s run and has been phenomenal on Taliyah, Galio, and Orianna. His ability to engage and disengage effectively with each of those champions isn’t an easy task to master, but he has done just that.

If there were any questions about whether or not he could play a carry champion, he answered those too. In the first game against Jin Air, he hopped on Syndra and totally obliterated Kuzan’s Taliyah. BDD went 13-1-4 on the champion and broke Bang’s mark for most kills in a game this summer. That was despite a slow start where there was just one kill in the first 18 minutes of action and the fact that he put up those numbers in a tank-heavy meta speaks volumes to his skill.

BDD’s play will be crucial in Longzhu’s last two matches. Longzhu must face both Rolster and Samsung to close out the split. If they beat both, they should instantly become the favorite to win Worlds.

Can KT finally beat SKT?

If KT can’t beat SKT now, it never will. The second Telecom War of the summer is coming up next week and these teams have been heading in opposite directions. SKT finally halted a nine-game losing streak with a sweep of last-place Ever8 Winners, but that win doesn’t impress anyone. SKT has looked better in the Patch 7.14 meta, drafting tanks and using Trystana and Alistar in the bottom lane, but a win over Ever8 really doesn’t answer any questions.

Meanwhile, KT is desperate to beat SKT. KT has been able to continually get the better of Samsung, but SKT remains the thorn in their side that they can’t remove. Typically, KT dominates the early game against SKT, but makes one mistake in the mid game and everything falls apart from there. Rolster has it in their heads that they will never beat SKT and they have to right that now while SKT is the weakest it’s been in three years. If not, this superteam was formed for nothing and everyone will simply go their separate ways after Worlds are over and done.
