League of Legends 2017 Worlds Play-In Stage Betting Preview

2017-BM-eSports-Coverage-Betting-Spreads

For the first time ever, the League of Legends World Championships will be truly global. Although the five major regions have dominated proceedings in the past, Worlds has now moved to a Champions League style format where the smaller regions will at least have a representative in the early stages of the tournament. This weekend 12 teams will vie for four spots in the Group Stage where the superpowers from across the globe lie in wait. Although there is one team from a major region in each group that is supposed to dominate the proceedings, every region now has a chance to make it to the biggest stage in League of Legends.

Team WE -725 Lyon Gaming +525

Team World Elite are massive favorites in this game and are seen by sportsbooks as a lock to advance out of the Play-in Stage and into the Group Stage. Team WE has one of the best mid laners in the world in Xiaohu and he has taken his play to another level recently. He has been fantastic on power picks like Lucian, Syndra, and LeBlanc this season and will be the main player that Lyon must contain if they have a shot at winning.

Some of the other teams wouldn’t stand a chance against Team WE, but Lyon does. Lyon has won all nine Latin America North titles since the league’s inception and played well at the Mid-Season Invitational, failing to make it out of the play-in stage only because of the sleeping giant that was GIGABYTE Marines. WhiteLotus is a very good AD Carry and the team will look to play through him.

Cloud9 -600 Team oNe e-Sports +460

The one North American team that didn’t disappoint at Worlds last year was Cloud9. Cloud9 managed to make it to the Quarterfinals before being unceremoniously dumped by Samsung Galaxy. Jensen and Sneaky are two of the more talented players in the world at their positions and Cloud9 can play through either the top or bottom lane. Jensen is an assassin who can get caught out in the mid lane if he doesn’t respect his opponent though, and that’s something to keep an eye on.

Team oNe is new to the League of Legends scene, but Brazil’s champions have made a big splash before. INTZ, Brazil’s champion last year, famously knocked off Edward Gaming on the first day of Group Stage last year and that nearly led to EDG not qualifying for Worlds. The team acquired Brucer to be its mid laner after its founding and the former RED Canids mid lane talent has helped take this team to the summit of League of Legends in Brazil.

Fnatic -530 Kaos Latin Gamers +410

It was strange to not see Fnatic at Worlds last season. The team was going through some internal changes and couldn’t quite rally to make it to North America, but laid the groundwork to be the best team in the regular season in Europe this last split. Fnatic’s players, particularly Rekkles, are KDA kings and will look to jump on KLG early.

Kaos Latin Gamers underwent a myriad of changes through the first five months of this year, but have had a relatively static lineup for the last few months and went on to earn a spot here at Worlds. This team has never done anything of note on the international stage though and it’s hard to imagine them knocking off Fnatic.

Hong Kong Attitude -150 Fenehrbahce +130

Hong Kong Attitude was a surprise inclusion here. J Team was supposed to be the third team from LMS and would have been a big favorite, but HKA was able to usurp the spot. Keep an eye on former AD Carry Riris, who has been great since switching to become a top laner.

There are a lot of people who are optimistic that Fenehrbahce can be the first soccer club to make a big splash with its League of Legends team. They swept BAU SuperMassive in the Turkish Champions League Finals to make it to the Worlds for the first time ever and are considered the best hope for another Cinderella to make it to the Group Stage. They have a fantastic jungler in Move who previously played for top teams like Edward Gaming and Unicorns of Love.
