League of Legends - 2017 Mid-Season Invitational Wrap-up

eSports-Coverage-bm

Three weeks of action in Brazil gave us a lot of great League of Legends play. The Koreans once again proved that they have the best teams in the world, but the gap between them and the rest of the world might finally be narrowing. G2 finally showed that they were a team to be reckoned with on the international stage and Gigabyte Marines gave hope to small teams everywhere. Only Flash Wolves and Team SoloMid can say that they had disappointing results but it’s better to have those now than at Worlds.

TAKEAWAYS

G2’s Performance Against World Elite and SK Telecom T1

G2 backed into the knockout stage after finishing tied with Team SoloMid and Flash Wolves at 4-6 in the Group Stage, but came alive when it mattered most. G2 was a moderate underdog to WE heading into their semifinal match-up but dominated the Chinese champions 3-1. The Europeans won by doing to WE what they had done to other teams all season, winning the mid and late game.

Perkz was huge for G2 in the series and showed that he may be the best mid-laner outside of Korea. His Viktor pick into Lucien was a huge reason why G2 won the first game in the series. He ended up with 12 kills, 9 assists, and 2 deaths and set the tone for the rest of the series.

In the final against SKT, Perkz showed that he belonged on the main stage. He constantly harassed Faker in the early game in the first two games of the series and outperformed him for much of those two games. Perkz showed that even Faker can bleed and should head back to Europe with his head held high.

Team SoloMid needs a new AD Carry

To no one’s surprise, WildTurtle and TSM parted ways shortly after MSI wrapped up. Everyone knew that WildTurtle on TSM would only be a temporary fix, but the need for a more permanent solution became evident after the team’s poor showing at MSI.

WildTurtle is maddening to watch. His talent is obvious and at times he can totally take over the game on an Ashe or a Varys. However, he is also out of caught out of position way too often and is too quick to charge into fights. Too many times at MSI he was picked off because he was either too far forward in lane or because he was inexplicably on the front line in a team fight. With much of the meta being around AD Carry builds, TSM knew it couldn’t have success on the international level with WildTurtle.

Will the Gigabyte Marines inspire a new meta?

Some of the best teams in the world had trouble with Gigabyte Marines’ frenetic kill-crazy style of play. The Marines knocked off WE, TSM, and G2 by constantly going for kills and completely flustered teams that rely on a particular strategy to win. The rest of the world saw how well this worked and have to be wondering if it can work for them to.

Unicorns of Love had already somewhat incorporated this into their strategy during the Spring Split and they were the team that G2 had the most problems with in Europe. Don’t be surprised to see teams in China, Europe, and North America adopt some of these characteristics and use them in the Summer.
