League of Legends - 2017 Mid-Season Invitational G2 vs. Team WE

eSports-Coverage-05-19-bm

Saturday’s semifinal between G2 and Team WE won’t get the publicity that Friday’s main event will, but this should be a much more competitive fight. For G2, it’s another chance for redemption as the European champs have long struggled on the international stage, but put forth a decent enough performance to make it to the semifinals this time around. For Team WE, it’s a chance to show that China is still the second-best region in the world despite the talent exodus that occurred in the offseason.

ROAD TO THE SEMIFINALS

At the end of the first round robin, SK Telecom T1 was sitting alone at the top of the standings at 5-0 and the other five teams were all 2-3. From that point, Team WE decided enough was enough and won five straight to finish just one game back of SKT. Team WE beat every other team at MSI during that stretch, including the Korean giants, and have proven not to just be a one-trick pony by adapting to team’s counters.

G2 earned Europe a No. 1 seed at Worlds by finishing in third place in the group stage, but hasn’t been particularly impressive. G2 did win both games over Flash Wolves, but managed to go just 4-6 and are in this spot as the result of the shortcomings of the rest of the teams as much as anything else.

PRIOR MEETINGS

These two teams had not met prior to this year’s MSI, but WE simply outclassed G2 in their two meetings here.

In the first game, WE finished off G2 in just 28 minutes with a dominant performance. G2 had a poor draft, banning away two junglers in the first ban phase, only to see the pool drastically shallowed after not selecting a jungler in the first round of picks. That meant Trick had to select an off-meta champion and his eventual Nunu pick just couldn’t keep up with Condi’s Graves. Condi got a solo kill at the four-minute mark and snowballed the lead from there, getting seven of WE’s 10 kills in the win.

Game 2 was more of the same, but in a much bloodier fashion. G2 did get an early gank on Ashe, but it didn’t matter as WE thumped the European champs from that point on. WE did not allow G2 to take a single objective in the game as Condi and xiye cleaned up. Xiye ended up going 7-0-8 on LeBlanc and WE got the victory in a shade over half an hour.

PREDICTIONS

This line is shaded only because people are more familiar with G2 than they are with Team WE. WE hasn’t been in a major international competition in two years prior to this MSI, whereas G2 has been a mainstay on the international stage. However, G2 has notoriously been a poor team at the international level and got waxed by WE in both of their matches.

If G2 is going to pull off the upset, Expect and Zven will have to outperform their counterparts. 957 is somewhat hit or miss in the top lane for WE and for as good as Mystic is as the AD Carry, Zven is probably better. That’s a very tall order though and if anything G2 should be a bigger underdog. Look for WE to win the series 3-1.
