Entering the last week of the Spring Split regular season, five of the six playoff spots in Europe have been set. G2 leads the way at an undefeated 12-0, but is the shakiest undefeated team you can imagine and is far from invincible. That sets up for a wild ride once the playoffs start with virtually every team in the postseason standing some chance of winning the title and earning a bid to the Mid-Season Invitational. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the major stories before the regular season ends.

ROCCAT?

ROCCAT was considered an also-ran for pretty much the entire European campaign, starting the season 0-7 and looking uncompetitive during much of that time. However, a win over fellow bottom feeder Origen triggered something within this team and they used that to spark a run where they have won five in a row and can get a playoff spot with a win over G2 this week. That’s a tall order but no one thought that this team could beat Misfits 2-0 last week either and they did just that.

HOW GOOD IS G2?

G2 might be undefeated, but has the fortune of playing in the far easier side of the European groups and has been tested by all the other contenders thus far save ROCCAT. Both Fnatic and Misfits took G2 to three games twice and H2K and Splyce did the same thing. While it is impressive that G2 has swept the lower-tier teams, this team’s play has left something to be desired. Its weaknesses were exposed at Katowice and one of the contenders from Group B could definitely take down G2.

Expect is without question the best top laner in Europe this year, with a KDA more than one full point ahead of every other starter in Europe. He is one of the rocks of this team, along with Zven and Perkz. However, the jungle is the relative weak link and there are some teams that can expose it in the right circumstances. Xerxe has been the best jungler in Europe and Unicorns of Love frenetic style can give anyone nightmares, while KaKAO and Jankos can rush out to an early lead in the jungle with some aggressive play and not look back.

CAN UNICORNS OF LOVE SHOW PUT IT ALL TOGETHER?

UoL is one of the biggest question marks in League of Legends. No team in Europe is capable of playing at a higher level when everything is clicking right, but UoL can still make very questionable decisions and are sometimes way too bold with their carefree style of play. Those same traits make them one of the most fun teams to watch in the entire world, but there are always those who are going to wonder just how good this team can be.

JANKOS IS THE KEY FOR H2K

There’s no question that without Jankos, H2K would not have went to the semi-finals at Worlds last season. Jankos was fantastic at deep jungle penetration and routinely surprised opposing junglers who did not expect him to be in certain spots in the early game. However, he has been hit and miss in Europe during the regular season with opponents scouting him well and making him pay for his aggressiveness. When Jankos is able to get an early gank, H2K is pretty good about snowballing that to a win, but problems arise if he fails.
