The top dogs of League of Legends are set to get started in just a few days. The LCK Korea Spring Split has already given us some big news with defending world champions Samsung Galaxy being bought out by KSV eSports. Samsung falling under such a huge brand will give it the resources necessary to remain competitive in the arms race that is Korean League of Legends.

Earlier this week, another one of the major teams was bought out too. LCK Summer Split 2017 champions Longzhu Gaming finally put it all together to win a domestic title last year and people across the world took notice. One of the biggest companies in China, Kingzone, bought the team and has renamed them Kingzone Dragon X. They remain a serious competitor to win it all.

The Favorites

Let’s be honest. One of the four favorites will win the Spring Split unless something utterly crazy happens. There is a clear gap between those four teams and the rest of the league, much like there is between the top teams in the Premier League and everybody else.

It’s interesting to see KT Rolster as the slight favorite. Rolster spent more money than anyone last offseason in order to re-emerge as a major force. The squad finished second in the Spring Split, but a third-place finish in the summer meant that it had to go through qualification in order to make Worlds. We all know what happened there, as the team crashed out against Samsung and couldn’t get to Worlds despite the impressive array of talent.

This year should be different. Much like Longzhu last season, a year of preparation has given this team time to develop some real chemistry.

Kingzone decided to sign the most high-profile free agent this offseason in an attempt to get back to Worlds. Peanut and SKT just didn’t mesh well together, and everyone knew that he would be available this offseason. Kingzone was able to grab the playmaking jungler at a discount as a result, and BDD should have a fantastic year with a big upgrade in the jungle.

SKT is legendary as the best League of Legends team ever, but the dynasty might be fading. This team was stunned 3-0 by KSV at the World Championship Finals last season and decided to not make any major changes. Blank is back in the jungle, and Untara is now the full-time top-laner.

There has been zero respect given to the defending champions. Although KSV brought back its entire roster from last year’s World Championship winning team, they are seen as the odd team out among the favorites. That’s intriguing because no team has proven it is a better late-game team-fighting team than KSV over the last six months. There is great value in backing this team.

Best of the Rest

The signing of Trick and IgNar has many excited about the prospects about the LCK’s kookiest team, but I’m a bit more skeptical. IgNar shined in last year’s meta, yet we don’t have any idea how we will fare as a traditional support. Meanwhile, Trick had a lot of ups and downs last season in Europe, and he might not fare well in Korea.

Instead, the two longshots with the best hope of making a splash or MVP and ROX. MVP brought back its entire roster from last year and is hopeful to match its Spring Split performance from last year. It finished fourth then before having a disastrous Summer Split. The continuity should help in that regard.

As for ROX, this organization has consistently proven it can get big results given time to build a team. They had to start from scratch after 2016’s superteam was blown up, but this bunch seems ready to take the next step.
