G2 Team Preview

LoL-World-Championship-Team-Preview-8

Success has eluded this team on the international stage though. Last year, G2 was abysmal at both the Mid-Season Invitational and the World Championship, combining to go 3-13 in those two tournaments. Even worse, none of those three wins were against teams from major regions as the two wins at MSI came against BAU SuperMassive and the one win at Worlds came against Albus NoX Luna.

This season, things went a little bit better for G2 at the Mid-Season Invitational. They went just 4-6 in the Group Stage, but knocked off Flash Wolves twice and split with GIGABYTE Marines and Team SoloMid. In the knockout round, they shocked everyone by defeating Team World Elite and even took a game off of SK Telecom T1 in the finals. They are hoping to take the next step at this year’s Worlds and at least win their group.

Top Lane

Expect has been the team’s primary top laner since the 2016 Summer Split and will look to be a difference maker for G2 once again.

He had perhaps his worst split yet in summer of this year. Expect finished with a 3.5 KDA and there were concerns over whether or not he had lost his touch. He really struggled on champions like Rumble and Jayce, with G2 going 2-6 in those games.

However, he refound his form in the Summer Split Playoffs, largely because a change in the meta. Expect dominated on Cho’Gath, putting up an 8.2 KDA, as G2 romped to a 5-0 record. Look for other teams to ban that champion away from him at Worlds.

Jungle

Although he was one of the team’s best players last year, Trick has not been at his best in 2017. He really seemed to struggle adapting to a meta that de-emphasized playmaking junglers and wasn’t great on the support jungler of choice, Gragas. G2 went just 5-4 when he was on the champion and he had a 2.7 KDA on him.

Trick’s best champion this year has been Sejuani, and it’s not even close. G2 is 7-0 when he is on the champion and he posted a 16 KDA on the champion between the regular season and the playoffs.

Like Expect, he will probably be punished with a target ban on that champion.

Mid Lane

Perkz was fantastic in the early part of 2017. He dominated Europe when it mattered most in spring and put on a fantastic performance at MSI. He was even getting solo kills on the great Faker in the MSI Finals, and was expected to keep up his strong play in summer.

That wasn’t the case in the regular season. Like the rest of G2, Perkz wasn’t able to find his footing and couldn’t win on popular champions like Taliyah and Galio. He was able to find a lot of success on Orianna and LeBlanc though.

When the postseason came around, he was the difference maker for G2. He outplayed every mid laner he faced and proved that he is once again the best mid laner on the continent.

AD Carry

There’s no denying that Zven is the best team fighting AD Carry in Europe. He has proved it time and time again with G2 and continues to show why G2 trusts him so much.

Zven can play any style and any meta. He has been great on the hypercarries like Twitch, Tristana, and Xayah, and the traditional champions like Ashe and Varus. In the playoffs, he brought out Sivir and dominated on the champion, not dying once in three matches on his way to a 30 KDA.

Support

Mithy is the glue that holds together G2. He was fantastic in the Spring Split and saved this team time and time again. He continued to play strong in the summer despite eschewing popular picks like Rakan and Alistar, focusing on champions he knows such as Tahm Kench and Zyra.

In the playoffs, he finally brought out some of the more meta picks by going with Thresh and Braum and helped lead his team to victory in each of those games.

Prediction

G2 will be picked to finish third in this group, but could qualify for the Quarterfinals if some things go its way. Royal Never Give Up is an up and down team and G2 did beat Team WE at MSI. This team should be a trendy upset pick to advance.
