The lack of franchising and instability has meant that many of the European teams lost their top players to teams in other regions. While a couple teams were able to put together pretty strong rosters, many of the usual contenders have some major question marks. Many are already calling for Europe to be the weakest of the major regions, yet that’s not going to stop these teams from duking it out over the next three months.

CHANGING OF THE GUARD
Many view this split as Fnatic’s to lose. Fnatic brought back its entire roster that dominated the regular season Summer Split in 2017 and made an improvement too.
While Jesiz was a decent support last year, Fnatic could not pass on the opportunity to add a player like Hylissang to the roster. Hylissang had been the support for Unicorns of Love for the last four seasons and was the leader of the team. Unicorns of Love were one of the many teams not looking to spend a lot this offseason because of the situation in Europe, and Fnatic used that to its advantage. He should team up with Rekkles to make the best bottom lane duo in the region.
WHAT ABOUT G2?
The Kings of Europe are essentially no more. Zven and mithy left to go to Team SoloMid in North America, while Expect and Trick headed back to Korea this offseason. That means that mid laner PerkZ will have to defend G2’s crown with four brand new faces this split.
The good news is that these are all familiar faces in the EU scene. Wunder was Splyce’s top laner for the last two seasons and Jankos was considered one of the better junglers in the world during his time on H2K.
It will be interesting to see how the new bottom lane fares. There’s no question that Zven and mithy were the best bottom lane duo in Europe for the last two years, and G2 signed ROCCAT’s bottom lane to replace them. Hjarnan and Wadid are talented and do have chemistry with each other, but replacing those two is tough.
CAN SCHALKE 04 COMPETE?
FC Schalke was one of the first traditional sports teams to throw its money into eSports and its team is now considered one of the favorites in Europe. This will be their first season in the top flight of European League of Legends, having just been promoted at the end of last year.
It didn’t take long for Schalke to sign some established talent. Adding Vizicsacsi and Nukeduck proves that this team is looking to compete immediately. Chemistry might be an issue though.
THE COLLAPSE OF H2K
For the last few years, H2K has been one of the better teams in the region. It looks like its time might be over though. Its entire roster left at the end of the season, and H2K was forced to sign a brand-new team. The organization didn’t settle on its team until mid-December, putting them behind many of the other teams in the region. There are no proven names on this roster and it looks like this could be a disastrous year for H2K.
