How dominant have Korean teams been in League of Legends? Korean teams have won the last three World Championships, placed three teams in this year’s Semifinal, and last season brought us our first ever all-Korean Final. Samsung Galaxy is aiming to win its second World Championship and bring us an all-Korean final for the second year in a row, but H2K are looking to stop them and become the first European team to be crowned champions since Fnatic won the inaugural tournament.

HOW THEY GOT HERE

It says something about the state of LoL that Samsung Galaxy were the third or fourth best team in Korea this season and are favorites to make the Final here. SSG had a bit of a slow start in this tournament getting trounced by Team SoloMid in their first group match-up, but have responded strongly since then. They defeated TSM in the re-match and then set records with how fast they trounced first Royal Never Give Up and then Splyce to win Group D and make the Quarterfinals. Once there, SSG simply outclassed an outmatched Cloud9 team 3-0 to earn their spot here.

For H2K, it was touch and go for the longest time and they had a lot of help to get here. H2K were drawn in what turned out to be the weakest group of the tournament, and the only one without a Korean powerhouse. Still, they lost their first two matches and looked to be doomed to the same fate as the other European sides. However, H2K roared back and have now won seven straight matches including sweeping Albus NoX Luna in the Quarterfinals.

MATCHUP TO WATCH

H2K has changed up their strategy with the newest adjustments to the meta and if their series against ANX was any indicator, top laner Odoamne is going to weigh heavily into their plans. Through much of the year, H2K has relied on FORG1VEN to carry the load in the bottom lane, but now that the game has changed to emphasize top lane match-ups, Odoamne has been asked to do more. He played a fantastic first game against ANX and was solid in the other two to close out the upstarts.

However, Odoamne is going to have his hands full with CuVee. CuVee had the best KDA of any top laner in the Quarterfinals and thoroughly outplayed Impact last week. CuVee has been awesome playing in-lane at the beginning of a match and even better during the team-fighting stage later on. If H2K are to pull off an upset, Odoamne is going to have to outplay CuVee and that seems like a very tough ask.

THE PICK

Samsung has played much better competition in order to get here and are extremely battle tested after a year facing the top teams in Korea. Although H2K have been very solid in the laning phase of the game, there are still issues with their chemistry as the game progresses and that’s where SSG are going to be able to take advantage. Although SSG isn’t likely to secure the fast victories that set them apart from their competition earlier in the tournament, they are going to be able to slowly outmaneuver H2K and should win this series 3-1.
