eSports Odds - League of Legends Regional Qualifiers Preview

eSports-Update-bm-ar

The League of Legends World Championships are right around the corner. The month-long World Championships kick off at the end of September and while 10 of the 16 teams already have berths, there are still six spots up for grabs. Whoever gets these spots will guarantee themselves a decent payday with a chance for the best payout of the season for whoever wins the title. With that in mind, let’s look at the teams still trying to get into Worlds.

EUROPE

Giants Gaming +155
Unicorns of Love -195

This is a re-match of one of the Quarterfinal matches in the Summer Playoffs. In that series, UoL got the better of Giants and that’s the main reason why UoL is a favorite here. Before that match, Giants was the favorite to defeat UoL but that’s the kind of difference a match or two can make.

What makes UoL a solid team is its ability to think outside the box. Unlike many teams who get stuck thinking the same way until a new update or patch comes out, UoL will constantly tinker and try new things and more often than not that works out for the team. Rather than stay glued to traditional builds and lay-outs, UoL will sometimes go renegade and teams will be completely lost on how to counter them.

Sonstar has had a checkered history against UoL. Earlier in the summer, he scored a rare Pentakill with Ezrael against the side but has struggled recently. He was isolated too much in the playoff match against UoL in the Quarterfinals and that led to Giants losing team fights. He’ll need to play a lot better this time around.

UoL seems to be peaking at the right time. It’s two best players, Veritas and Move, made the jump to Europe after a season in North America, and after some chemistry issues the team banded together. Also, although UoL has not been able to scrimmage prior to the tournament, Giants’ coach David Vicente tweeted that his team was suffering from internal issues and those are usually deadly in LoL. Look for UoL to get a 3-1 win against Giants here.

NORTH AMERICA

Liquid -110
EnVyUs -120

Neither Liquid nor EnvyUs were able to make it out of the quarterfinals in the Summer Playoffs and it’s very likely the team that wins this match-up will be one and done in the playoffs. However, there have been longer odds teams have rallied from in League of Legends history and each side believes it can vanquish the three teams it needs in order to make Worlds. It happened last year with Cloud9 defeating all three other sides to make it to Worlds and it could always happen again.

It’s uncommon for a summoner other than the Support role to lead the squad in assists over a tournament, but jungler Dardoch did just that for Team Liquid in the Summer Playoffs. That’s why it hurts all the more that he won’t be playing with Liquid here. Despite being arguably the best player on the team, his feuds with management led to him being suspended and subsequently signing with Echo Fox. He will be replaced by Arcsecond who will be playing as a jungler for the first time ever.

EnVyUs is a more stable side and the better team to go with in this one. Although Liquid may have a bit more talent, EnVy has more chemistry and that’s far more important.
