Team Liquid is a slight favorite here, likely as the result of winning DreamLeague Season 6 last year. It was a nice win to end 2016, but this team was a major disappointment at the tournament that has the biggest prize pool in all of eSports, The International. The International eclipsed a prize pool of $20 million in 2016 to make it by far the most rewarding event we have ever seen. Liquid was one of the favorites to take home the over $9 million first prize, but had a woeful performance in the group stage and couldn’t make it out of the loser’s bracket.

The draw for this event didn’t do Liquid any favors. They were placed in the same group as Wings Gaming and Digital Chaos, the teams that made the finals of The International last season, but have made changes to their line-up since that point. The biggest addition was swiping Miracle- from OG. Miracle- was the first person ever to crack a 9000 matchmaking rating and was a breakout star with OG in his debut season. Additionally, Bulba was replaced by GH, who has looked good in the few times we have seen him.

OG may have lost Miracle-, but is in a better position in this tournament. Their path to the finals is a lot clearer than Liquid’s is, and although they too were a major disappointment at The International, getting knocked out by minnows TNC, they have responded.

The last major event of 2016 was the Boston Major and even without Miracle-, Cr1t-, and MoonMeander, this team still pasted the competition. OG only dropped four rounds the entire tournament and bested most of the teams competing in this event. An early match against TNC will give them a shot at revenge and this team will be ready for it.

Wings is the other team to take a long look at. This was the side that won The International last season and ended up grabbing six first-place finishes in tournaments between April and November 2016. The big question is why they are so underrated playing a tournament in their home country.

Although their last two outings weren’t great, semi-finals exits at ESL One Genting and China Top 2016, this is undoubtedly one of the best sides around and they shouldn’t be this much of an underdog. Wings might have lost to Digital Chaos at Genting, but will get the upper hand this time around. Look for the hosts to face OG in the finals.
