The first season of eLeague was a smash hit with solid ratings on TBS and a healthy number of views online. It was the first time ever that eSports had been on cable television in America and its success pushed TBS to create a second season. After this week’s action, the playoffs will commence with eight teams vying for a chance to win the $400,000 first prize. Will Virtus Pro be able to defend its title or will a challenger be able to knock them off the throne?

SK Gaming +275
Virtus Pro +333
Ninjas in Pyjamas +700
Team Dignitas +700
Astralis +800
EnvyUs +900
Fnatic +1200
mousesports +1200
FaZe +1400
OpTic Gaming +3300

The first thing that jumps out about these odds is that Virtus Pro is not the favorite, despite winning the first season and a dominant performance in Group B. Virtus Pro put together the best group stage performance we have seen yet, trouncing Echo Fox 16-1 and perennial contender Ninjas in Pyjamas 16-7 to coast into the Quarterfinals without the hassle of playing through a loser’s bracket.

Instead, SK Gaming is the favorite to win it all, and if you watched Season 1 you remember why. SK Gaming was branded as Luminosity then, and the Brazilian side ran roughshod over its opponents. Luminosity went 10-1 and finished the group stage as the team with the best record, but after coming to an agreement to join SK Gaming, the team was disqualified from the competition for a breach of rules. Controversy ensued as backers claimed that no rules were broken since the roster didn’t change, just the team, but the powers that be affirmed their decision.

SK Gaming responded by traveling to Cologne for ESL One and torching a field that was missing some of the top CS:GO teams due to eLeague commitments en route to a $500,000 prize. This team is led by FalleN and under his stewardship has become one of the top tier teams in CS:GO.

Fnatic was the favorite to win the tournament last season after SK Gaming was removed from competition, so it’s somewhat of a surprise to see them at such long odds. The team is dealing with a little bit of internal turmoil with Dennis having to leave the team before the season started due to personal issues and he has been replaced by the team’s new coach Jumpy. Jumpy has never played with Fnatic and only achieved marginal success as a player himself so his performance will be key in a situation like this.

If you’re looking for another longshot to put some money on, look no further than mousesports. Mousesports has yet to break through with a level at the premier tier, but has knocked on the door all year long. This side made the semi-finals of last season’s eLeague, where they fell to Virtus Pro, and finished runners-up at the Gfinity tournament just two months ago.

Mouse were able to exact a measure of revenge in the group stage as well. After losing to Cloud9 in the semi-finals of last month’s ESL Pro League Season 4, Mouse were able to knock off Cloud9 19-16 and send Cloud9 to the loser’s bracket where they were eliminated by FaZe. It was a huge victory and also sent one of the pre-tournament favorites crashing out.
