eSports-Coverage-bm-05-05

Next Wednesday, the Mid-Season Invitational will begin in earnest with the group stage round-robin kicking off. Regional champions from the five major regions, and one international wildcard, will meet up to determine which team is the best in the world in Sao Paulo. SK Telecom T1 are massive favorites, but the team that has been their arch-nemesis on the international stage are looming as a major threat. The winner of this year’s MSI will take home at least $400,000 and bragging rights for their region.

THE FAVORITE

The most decorated team in the history of League of Legends are looking to add another title to their resume. SK Telecom T1 has won three of the last four World Championships in addition to last year’s MSI, but is not about to rest on its laurels. Even though KT Rolster constructed an all-star roster in the offseason to challenge SKT’s domestic dominance, SKT wiped the floor with KT in the Spring Split Grand Final to win another Korean title and a spot at MSI.

SKT is so talented across the board that it might just have the best player at every position at this tournament. Everyone knows that Faker is the undisputed best player in the world, but Peanut is coming off of a fantastic performance in the Korean Grand Finals that garnered him MVP honors and Huni has proven to be a great pick-up in the top lane. Additionally, although there are some bottom lanes in the world that might be better than SKT’s duo of Bang and Wolf, none of those teams are at MSI.

If you’re looking for a reason to think that SKT might go down, just take a glance at what happened at last year’s MSI. They went just 6-4 in group stage before going on to win the title and dropped both games against the team that fared the best against them last season.

THE ACHILLES HEEL

Flash Wolves have looked utterly unstoppable when we have seen them in 2017. The LMS champions only dropped two games all Spring in domestic play and made quick work of most of their opponents. They crushed the top teams in Europe at IEM Katowice earlier this year and made quick work of SuperMassive in the play-in series on Thursday.

Few teams in the world have a better combination of jungler and mid laner than Flash Wolves. Karsa has again proven that the praise he receives for his jungle play, particularly on Lee Sin, is warranted and Maple can play a number of magic champions in the mid lane very effectively. These two play a very aggressive style that is hard for teams to counter.

THE REST

Team WE might have the next best chance to win just because we know so little about them. This squad hasn’t played outside of China this season, but swept Royal Never Give Up in the LPL Spring Final. If you want to know how to beat this team though ask EDward Gaming, who beat them in all four games in which they squared off this year.

Team SoloMid was considered to be the favorite for third place before their performance against Gigabyte Marines in the play-in series on Wednesday. TSM nearly lost their series to the Vietnamese champs and had trouble handling their aggressive style. If TSM had trouble with Gigabyte Marines, they are going to have massive problems stopping the constant pressure from Flash Wolves.

G2 won its third straight European title, but has yet to do anything of note on the international stage. This team went 3-11 combined at 2016 MSI and Worlds and got hammered at Katowice by Flash Wolves earlier this year. It’s now or never for this team to actually show it can compete with the best teams in the world.

The last spot will come down to who wins the series between Gigabyte Marines and SuperMassive on Saturday. Both teams are fun to watch, but will have a tough time making it out of group stage.
